RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md. Riazul Islam, along with inter-agency representatives, inspected the Tantibazar area under Zone 7/1 of RAJUK to reduce building accidents in the area under the jurisdiction of the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK). Representatives from the District Administration, City Corporation, Fire Service, Dhaka WASA, Titas Gas, DPDC and other government agencies were present during the inspection.

This inspection was conducted today in various residential and non-residential buildings and establishments in Tantibazar to raise awareness on reducing other building-related risks including fire and earthquake. During this time, the inspection team was concerned about the accident tolerance of the buildings built in various places without following any design, including the narrow roads of Tantibazar. Most of the buildings built without leaving enough space according to the RAJUK building construction rules did not have any RAJUK approved designs. During the inspection, a building that had previously been disconnected from electricity due to irregularities in the construction of the building was visited. A very narrow and risky staircase was found in the same building. Unauthorized residential and commercial use was observed in the same building. There was no fire extinguishing system and no staircase for emergency exit was found in the building. At this time, the residents of the building requested to re-establish the electricity connection, but considering the risk, the RAJUK Chairman strictly stated that the connection would not be restored before the irregularities were corrected. At this time, he advised the residents of the building to be aware of not living in the risky building.
Later, the inspection team visited some more risky buildings. In one of the buildings, they saw an institution called People’s Credit Cooperative Limited, which did not have adequate fire-fighting equipment. At the same time, since there is no system in the office to deal with fire or any kind of disaster, the owner of the institution was instructed to be present at the RAJUK Chairman’s office with all the proofs related to the institution’s approval. In addition, a gold shop was found in one of the buildings as well as a battery factory, which is a big risk for fire. The RAJUK Chairman spoke to the representatives of the business association of the area and made them aware of the existing risks. At the same time, he instructed them to come to the RAJUK building and correct the deviations on their own initiative with the necessary guidelines on how to make the buildings in this area free from all kinds of risks. At the same time, the RAJUK Chairman instructed the concerned officials to take action according to the rules regarding the deviations in the buildings.
During the inspection, the RAJUK Chairman said, “Today we have not come here to conduct any operation, we have come to make the people of Tantibazar aware. Most of the buildings here do not have RAJUK approved designs. The buildings have been built unplanned. If such buildings catch fire or have an earthquake, many people will lose their lives and various accidents will occur. We are taking action against such buildings in coordination with the inter-agency.” Giving a stern warning, he said, “No one will be able to live in risky buildings.”

In addition to the inter-agency representatives, RAJUK member (Development Control) Mr. Mohd. Harun-or-Rashid and various levels of RAJUK officials were also present during the inspection.
