The police stopped the 17th teachers’ registration march towards the Secretariat to demand their three-point demands. When the protesters were asked to leave the important state establishment, the Secretariat area, they refused to comply. Later, the police lobbed six sound grenades at them to disperse the protesters.
The incident took place at Gate No. 5 of the Secretariat adjacent to the Press Club on Sunday (June 15). The teachers held a ‘Long March to Secretariat’ program in the morning. Later, they left for the Secretariat at around 1:30 pm.
Till the time of writing this report, the protesters were seen continuing to occupy the Press Club intersection. In addition, additional police have been deployed in the area and the situation is currently tense.
In this regard, Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said, “As far as we know, five to six people have been injured. Sound grenades were lobbed.” They had a long march program towards the Secretariat. They had been holding a program in front of the Press Club since morning. Then suddenly at 1:30 pm they came here. I have come to know that the 17th registration holders who passed the private teacher registration exam were standing in front of the Press Club.
He also said, I had sent five of them to the Secretariat. So that they could go to the Secretariat and talk to the concerned department and get an update on their issues. So these five of them have gone. After leaving, it seems that the five of them are saying that they will not leave there until a solution is found here or there is no other option.
He said, they came back to Link Road, as usual we have a barricade on Link Road. When they tried to break the barricade, the police first stopped them, requested them to go back. But even then they did not comply, they became a little reckless.
Masud Alam said, we cannot even let them go to the Secretariat. Section 144 has been imposed there. We think we had to fire one or two rounds of sound grenades to bring the situation under control. One or two of our policemen were also slightly injured.
