Initiatives have been taken to rescue the illegally occupied hundred-year-old canal in Pirojpur. The canal excavation and eviction of illegal structures began on Friday morning under the supervision of the district administration and with the help of local voluntary organizations.

According to local residents, various illegal structures had been built on both sides of the two-kilometer-long and 20-22-foot-wide canal that flows through the city for a long time. As a result, the normal flow of the canal was obstructed and waterlogging was occurring in the area. Now these structures are being demolished and the canal is being restored to its previous form.

As part of the eviction drive, several illegal structures on both sides of the canal have already been demolished. Some of these include concrete structures. The administration had already issued a notice in this regard, the concerned people said.

On the instructions of Pirojpur Deputy Commissioner Md. Ashraful Alam Khan, Pirojpur Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Mamunur Rashid inspected the second day of the re-excavation of Pirojpur’s traditional Bharani Canal. At that time, Pirojpur District Krishak Dal Vice President M. Sohel Mahmud, former student leader Alif Ahmed Rajib, and various officials and employees of Pirojpur District Administration, Upazila Administration, District Council, and Pirojpur Municipality were with him.

Pirojpur District Krishak Dal Vice President M. Sohel Mahmud said, this traditional Bharani Canal of Pirojpur is a canal of public importance. This canal has been abandoned for the past 16 years. I applaud the Pirojpur Deputy Commissioner for his great initiative to re-excavate the canal. Along with this, we express our determination to provide all-out cooperation on behalf of the people of Pirojpur Municipality and my District Krishak Dal.

After the inspection, the Pirojpur Sadar Upazila Executive Officer said, “We are continuing our activities on the instructions of the Pirojpur Deputy Commissioner and with the local dignitaries here. Today is the second day of the activities, this canal excavation activity will continue, we believe that we will be able to take this canal to the place where the people of Pirojpur have long demanded that it be free from encroachment and flowing and we will be able to give the people of Pirojpur a beautiful canal, we have miked before digging this canal and informed everyone. I believe that somehow this information has reached everyone and we have been planning this for a long time and have started the activities by informing everyone. For now, we have the voluntary organizations of Pirojpur with us, the Pirojpur municipal administration, the upazila administration and the district administration.
