Although all types of gas connections are currently closed in the country, it has been reported from several sources that some gas connections have been given to Laksam in the dark of night in the last 3/4 months. As part of this, gas connection was given to Anwar Hossain’s newly constructed 6-storey building behind Laksam Daulatganj Government Primary School while the work was in progress. Apart from the debate about how the house owner got this gas connection, there is also a question in the public mind about how legal this gas connection is. On the evening of April 22, the residents were alarmed by the loud sound of gas leakage at the base of the newly added regulator. Fear of fire was reported to Bakhrabad Gas Office and Laksam Fire Service and Civil Defense Office. Later, the gas line was stopped with the help of Atul Nag, Incharge of Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Laxam. Unable to show any documents for immediate gas connection, the people from the gas office opened the regulator on the instructions of Atul Nag. The owner of the house, Anwar Hossain, said that although the documents have been submitted to the office for the approval of the connection, the approval paper has not yet been received.
Residents claim that the connection is being used illegally if the house owner does not receive any approved documents. No one is admitting that any contractor authorized by Bakhrabad Gas has done this work. Although there is no rule for gas connection without an approved contractor, there are various comments about how this connection was provided and who provided this connection. If the gas line has been used before approval or illegally, then the people of the area have strongly demanded to take action according to the existing laws of the Bangladesh government. According to sources, Anwar Hussain’s building, between two six-and-a-half-story buildings, was leaking gas at a high speed and loud noise on its ground floor. When the caretaker of the house called the owner of the house, he said, Mistry will not be available at night. Let’s see what can be done. Due to this, the people around including the caretaker panicked and informed the Bakhrabad Gas Company. Sources said that if there had been an accident like a fire, both the buildings would have been damaged and there was no water system nearby to douse the fire. The local residents narrowly escaped this fire. Sources also said that where there was a risk of this fire, lines have been laid for connecting gas to more under-construction buildings in the area. It is also necessary to find out who drew those lines and for how much money. Atul Nag, in-charge of Bakhrabad Gas Laxam office, said that after hearing the news of gas leakage on the night before Eid, people were sent to isolate the regulator and further official activities are underway.
