A schoolgirl named Jannati Begum (12) was called from her house in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat and strangled to death. Police have arrested a youth in this incident.
On Wednesday (April 16) night, the police arrested the accused youth Belal Hossain (20) from her house in Char Bhotmari village of Bhotmari union of the upazila.
Jannati is the daughter of Fazlul Haque of Char Bhotmari village of the upazila.
She is a sixth-grade student of the local Bhotmari SC High School. The arrested youth Belal Hossain is the son of Abu Taleb of the same village.
Police and locals said that on Wednesday evening, Jannati’s mother left Jannati alone at home and went to visit her sick grandmother. After returning from there, she started searching in different places when she could not find her daughter at home.
There are corn fields around their house. At one stage of the search, Jannati’s mother became suspicious when she saw four/five people, including the arrested youth Belal, running away from the corn field. Later, she went to the corn field and saw her daughter’s body lying there and informed the police through the locals.
On receiving the information, Kaliganj Police Station reached the spot, recovered Jannati’s body and sent it to the Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital morgue. Jannati’s father Fazlul Haque filed a murder case with Kaliganj Police Station against four/five unknown people, including Belal. The police arrested the accused youth Belal Hossain in this case that night.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Selim Malik said that the killers strangled the deceased Jannati by stuffing soil from her mouth to her throat. No signs of rape were found at the initial stage. However, it has been reported that Jannati’s brother and the arrested Belal’s brother have a conflict. The investigation is being carried out on the assumption that this incident could have happened due to their family feud.
