The rains of the last few days and the water coming down from the hills have increased the water in the rivers in the northern part of the country.  In this situation, Lalmonirhat district is also affected by floods.  If there is heavy rainfall in between and the flood situation in the flood-prone districts located in the country’s river basins does not improve, it is expected that the relatively low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat district will be inundated and may cause short or long-term flooding.
Meanwhile, according to the information provided by the Water Development Board (PUBO), the water of Dharla river is flowing over the boundary line.  And the Teesta water is close to the border.
According to Paubo, at 6 pm on Saturday, the water of Dharla river flowed 270 cm below the water level at Patgram point, but it flowed 10 cm above the water level at Shimulbari point.  At Shimulbari Point, 16 cm above the coastal line at 6 am, 18 cm at 9 am and 39 cm above the coastal line at 12 noon on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Teesta water flowed 12 cm below the low tide level at Dalia Point at 6 pm on Saturday, 13 cm below at 6 am on Sunday, 13 cm below at 9 am and 24 cm below at 12 noon.  And Kaunia Point recorded 21 cm down at 6 pm on Saturday, 13 cm down at 6 am on Sunday, 11 cm down at 9 am and 11 cm down at 12 noon.
As the water level of Dharla is above the danger limit, several villages in the lower areas of Kulaghat and Mogulhat Union of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila have been flooded.  In several places of these areas, water entered the crop fields and localities.
On the other hand, at least 15 unions of Lalmonirhat district of Teesta basin have experienced flooding in the river banks and grazing areas.  In particular, thousands of families in Daubari of Hatibandha upazila, Mahishkhocha of Gaddimari Aditmari upazila and Rajpur, Khuniagach of Sadar upazila have been waterlogged.
Shunil Kumar, executive engineer of Lalmonirhat Water Development Board, said that this water may remain stable for the next two days.
