The nikah registrar filed a case against 4 journalists in the cyber tribunal for publishing an investigative report on the 3 marriages of an unmarried boy in Lalmonirhat, a child marriage free district.
Nikah Registrar Kazi Omar Ali of Moglhat Union of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila has filed a case in the cyber tribunal in Rangpur court. She is Maulvi teacher of Chhabera Khatun Girls High School in Durgapur Union of Aditamari Upazila.
Raju Mia, a minor, is the son of Awal Mia of Gandhamrua village in Durgapur union of Aditmari upazila. According to her birth certificate (15/12/2003) she is over twenty years old, but according to government rules, marriage is not allowed before the age of 21. But in twenty years, he has divorced 2 marriages in 3 marriages.
The accused journalists in the complaint filed in the Cyber Tribunal are Ashraful Haque, Lalmonirhat correspondent of Ajker Business Bangladesh newspaper, Niyan Dulal of Asian TV and Zwarvadihi newspaper, Liakat Ali of Dainik Navchetna and Abdur Razzak of Daily Lakhokantha.
It is known that Raju Mia, the son of Awal Mia of Gandhamrua village of Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat, married Farzana, the teenage daughter of Fazlu Haque of Bhatibari village of Mughalhat union, for the first time at the age of 18 two years ago. As the bride and groom are younger, the Nikah Register of Pashavarti Mughalhat Union, Kazi Omar Ali, did not give a copy of the marriage registry. Within a month of their marriage, the sound of separation sounded in their family. The girl’s family could not take legal action as there was no copy. Finally, within a year of marriage, they got divorced through the same Nikah register.
After the separation, Raju Mia got married secondly to Rupali Khatun (13), a seventh grade student of the local Chhabera Khatun Girls’ High School, daughter of Aminul Haque of Durgapur village. The second marriage was registered by the Maulvi teacher of Rupali School, the Nikah Registrar of Mughalhat Union, Kazi Omar Ali. Kazi Omar Ali did not give a duplicate as there were not 2 bridegrooms. Even in that marriage, after a month, the sound of separation sounded. Again the family of the groom and the bride are in trouble. No party could take legal action for non-copy.
Finally, the bridegroom, Raju Mia, got married to Rupali and broke off their relationship on November 24 last year. However, Rupali’s family sent back the separation notice. To take legal action against Raju, Rupali’s family contacted nikah registrar Omar Ali from time to time asking for duplicate marriage certificate. Meanwhile, Raju married his first wife for the third time and moved to Dhaka.
Kazi Omar Ali came to the discussion for repeatedly collecting fees for the child marriage of a minor boy but not giving a duplicate. At the same time, 4 journalists started investigating the fraud of not giving valid documents by marrying a minor student of his school, who was himself a teacher. They released an investigative report with video interviews of all Rupali’s family members, marriage witness Ghatak and others involved.
When the news was published in the media, the district registrar summoned the Nikah registrar of Mughalhat union, Kazi Omar Ali, for a written explanation. Infuriated by this, on January 15, Kazi Omar Ali filed a lawsuit against 4 journalists in the Rangpur Cyber Tribunal. The judge tasked the Lalmonirhat Sadar police station to investigate the complaint.
Accused journalist Ashraful Haque said that the family of the victim of child marriage is being deprived of justice by not getting a copy of the marriage. The nikah registrar filed a false case to divert the incident and suppress the media. Which will be dealt with legally.
Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Omar Farooq said that the complaint is being investigated as per the order of the court. The report will be submitted to the court after investigation.
It is mentioned that Lalmonirhat was declared a child marriage free district 7 years ago. This declaration is limited to paper and pen and shows that child marriage is going on. Many social workers are also victims of attacks while trying to arrange child marriages. There is no benefit even after filing a complaint.
A source claims that almost all nikah registers in the district have secret volumes. Child marriage registry is kept in secret volume. Whose copy is not given until adulthood. Considering child marriage as a crime, parents also do not demand fake marriage. Both families look for fakes if there is no marriage. Many girls’ families are not able to take any legal action without getting duplicates. As a result, many are being deprived of their rights. Again, due to the money greed of some Nikah registers, many young girls are leaving the books and pulling the wealth of the world. Some have to bear the grief of being abandoned by their husbands at a young age while trying to take care of the family again.
Locals claim that the Maulvi teacher of Chhabera Khatun Girls’ School is a nikah register herself, so the students of that school are suffering from child marriage. Although it is against the rules to register a marriage outside one’s own union, the child marriage of Durgapur was registered by Kazi Omar Ali, the nikah registrar of Mughalhat Union, as he traveled to Durgapur as a school teacher. Making such a complaint, Durgapur Union Nikah Registrar Kazi Mahmudul Hasan Jewel said, “If the minors come for marriage, I explain them and send them back.” But the Nikah Register of Mughalhat is teaching these child marriages as a school teacher in Durgapur. For quite some time I banned him after seeing the scene of child marriage registry. But he doesn’t agree. Because of that child marriage is increasing in Durgapur.
