In Lalmonirhat, the sacrificial animal market has been packed ahead of Eid. 230,000 animals are ready. The number of medium-sized cows is more. It is known that as the holy Eid-ul-Azha approaches, the sacrificial animal markets in Lalmonirhat have become more crowded. Various markets, including the traditional Barabari market in Lalmonirhat, have already been crowded with a large supply of cows, goats, buffaloes and sheep. The hope of the local administration and farmers is that this Eid, it will be possible to meet the internal demand of Lalmonirhat district and send sacrificial animals to other regions of Bangladesh.
‎The weekly animal markets in the 5 upazilas of the district bordering the northern region have now become lively. Notable markets include Barabari, Durakuti, Nawab’s Hat (BDR Hat), Nayarhat, Sialkhowa, Chaparhat, Daikhawa and Hatibandha’s Barakhata.
‎A visit to Barabari Hat on the ground revealed that the entire market was bustling with the presence of local cows and the shouting of sellers. By 8 am, the entire premises were packed with cows. Although the price of cows ranges from 60,000 to 3 lakh taka, buyers are mainly interested in medium-sized cows.
‎The crowd is increasing, and there is an increasing tendency to buy in advance. Abul Hossain, who came to buy cows, said that prices are high before Eid. That’s why he came in advance. Today, Wednesday, I bought a cow for 75,000 taka. However, I was a little disappointed because of the brokers. Another buyer named Md. Sabur Ali said that 7 of us bought a cow for 70,000 taka. Buying together has been economical for us.
Milon Mia, who came to buy goats, said, I bought a khasi for 10 thousand taka. The supply of goats is good at the market.
‎Medium-sized cows are being sold more than large cows.
‎Yunus Ali, a farmer from Phulbari in Kurigram, said, he brought 5 cows. Out of which, 4 medium-sized cows have been sold, but one large cow has not been sold yet. Haider Ali of Panchagram Union said, there is still time for Eid. So, I have come early. However, I am noticing a slight increase in prices.
‎Alamgir Islam, a farmer from Barbari Union, said, I have brought 3 cows of 10-12 maunds. The expectation was that each cow would be sold for 2 lakh 60 to 2 lakh 70 thousand. However, buyers want to buy at a lower price. Farmers in Lalmonirhat say that despite the increase in cow feed and production costs, the expected price is not being obtained in sales. Afsar Mia of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila said that the cost has increased a lot this year compared to last year. However, the price has not increased that much. Security measures have been strengthened in the district’s cattle markets with emphasis on safety and hygiene. Police patrols and medical teams have been observed, including counterfeit note detection devices.
‎Lalmonirhat District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam said that this time most of the farmers have fattened their cows naturally. The use of hormones or injections has decreased. The medical team is ensuring that no sick animals come to the market.
‎He also said that about 230,000 sacrificial animals are ready in 5 upazilas of Lalmonirhat district. He confirmed that it will be possible to supply a significant number of cows to other districts of the country after meeting the demand.
