The court sentenced two active members of the banned militant organization Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 14 years in Lalmonirhat. On Sunday (February 19) afternoon, Lalmonirhat Court Special Tribunal-1 Judge, District and Sessions Judge Md. Mizanur Rahman gave this verdict. The convicts are JMB member Rakibul Islam Rakib alias Moazzin of Prabhat son of Korban Ali of Tongbhanga area of Hatibandha upazila and Nahid Hasan alias Nahid son of Aminur Rahman of East Sindurna area of the same upazila. Lalmonirhat Court Police Deputy Inspector (SI) Abdul Hai said that on the night of August 29, 2017, a team of Lalmonirhat Detective (DB) police raided the house of JMB member Rakibul Islam in Tongbhanga area of Hatibandha upazila. During the subversive secret meeting, everyone ran away on sensing the presence of the police, but the owner of the house, Rakibul, was arrested. Meanwhile, the police seized a mobile phone, two diaries and 22 Jihadi books from that house. In this incident, DB Deputy Inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman Mizan filed a case against six people under the Terrorism Act at Hatibandha police station. In that case, the investigation officer of the case filed a charge sheet against five people in the court.
After the long hearing of the case on Sunday (February 19) in the presence of two defendants, the judgment of the case was announced by the judge of the Special Tribunal-1 of Lalmonirhat Court District and Sessions Judge Md. Mizanur Rahman. In the verdict, the court sentenced militants Rakibul Islam Rakib and Nahid Hasan to 14 years imprisonment under the Terrorism Act and a fine of Tk 2,000 each, in default of payment, another six months imprisonment. The judgment also mentions that the convicts will be exempted from the sentence while they are in custody. The court acquitted the other three accused in this case. The acquitted are Mehdi Hasan Mishan, Hasanul Banna and Jamal Uddin. The court’s public counsel (PP) advocate Akmal Hossain Ahmed confirmed the truth of the incident.
