A madrasa student of class 9 took a complaint to the police station against forced child marriage. In view of the complaint, the court sentenced the alleged groom along with the broker. A 9th grade student (Minuka) of Bujrukh Mirzapur village of Shomspur Union of Khoksa Upazila of Kushtia was forcibly married off by her grandparents. On Wednesday morning, June 21, the girl was taken to Ghaskhal village of Kumarkhali Upazila and forced to sit on a child marriage mat. The girl’s father’s name is Sohel Hossain. He is a bricklayer by profession. The student is studying humanities in class IX of Biljani Dakhil Madrasa. After the wedding on Wednesday afternoon, the alleged new groom Noor Hossain (25), marriage broker (ghatak) Ramzan Ali Sheikh along with the girl was brought to her father’s house by the main organizer of the wedding, grandfather Alauddin alias Jan and grandmother Reshma Khatun. At one point in the evening, the student went to Khoksa police station along with her neighbor aunt. In the night, the police raided the student’s house and arrested Noor Hossain and Dalal Ramzan. At this time, the girl’s grandmother and grandfather hid themselves. The upazila executive officer set up a mobile court on the spot and sentenced the alleged groom Noor Hossain to two weeks and Dalal Ramzan to one month of unpaid imprisonment. On Thursday 22 June 2023, the convicts were sent to jail. Convicted Noor Hossain is the son of Delwar Hossain of Nandigram-Ghaskhal village of Kumarkhali upazila. Dalal Ramzan is the son of Jamal Sheikh of Gopalpur village of the same upazila. The indomitable student who fought against child marriage said that her grandparents forcibly took her and married her against her parents’ wishes. After two hours of marriage, the house was brought back. On this occasion, he went to the police station in the evening and appeared. Complained directly to the chief constable. He is happy to get justice. Her skin color is black so her grandparents have stigmatized her married name. He is determined to continue reading and writing. Even if he doesn’t eat one meal, he wants to get higher education and stand tall in society. The girl’s mother, Najma Khatun, said that the mother-in-law took her daughter by force and raped her in the clutches of Dalal Ghatak. The girl wants to read. Father also wants to teach his daughter. I have no land of my own. The husband works so the family runs. Mother-in-law put them in danger by marrying their daughter. Officer-in-charge of Khoksa police station, Mustafa Habiullah, said that as soon as the student came to him, he took action. Legal action has been taken after listening to the girl and boy side. Upazila Executive Officer Ripon Kumar Biswas said that the girl’s parents did not agree to the marriage. Tintu’s grandparents and broker forced her into marriage. After going to the spot and listening to both parties, punishment was imposed under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act. Superintendent of madrasa said that this girl’s bravery has made all the girls of the madrasa more motivated to study. So all facilities are free for this brave girl during her studies in my madrasa.
