A court has banned the president of the Metropolitan Awami League and ousted mayor of Khulna City Corporation Talukder Abdul Khalek and his wife, former member of parliament from Bagerhat-3 constituency Begum Habibun Nahar, from traveling abroad. The ban has been issued as the investigation into the allegations of amassing huge amounts of wealth disproportionate to their income is ongoing, confirmed Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Khulna Assistant Director and Investigation Officer Rakibul Islam.

On Tuesday, ACC official Rakibul Islam said that the investigation into the allegations of amassing huge amounts of wealth disproportionate to their income is ongoing against the former mayor of Khulna City Corporation Talukder Abdul Khalek. The investigation into the allegations of amassing illegal wealth against them has been going on since last February. In this situation, the ACC has received information that he and his wife may flee abroad. For this reason, on May 13, an application was filed in the Khulna Metropolitan Special Judge’s Court to ban them from leaving the country. In view of this, on May 15, the court accepted the application and ordered a ban on their foreign travel. Later, a copy of the court’s order was sent to the Director of the Immigration and Passport Department and the Special Police Superintendent of Immigration.

Incidentally, former mayor of Khulna City Corporation and president of Khulna Metropolitan Awami League Talukder Abdul Khalek and his wife, former member of parliament from Bagerhat-3 constituency Begum Habibun Nahar, have been absconding since August 4. Several cases have been filed against them for obstructing, shooting and killing students and the public during the mass uprising. In addition, several sabotage cases have also been filed.
Earlier, about 81 million taka in five bank accounts, FDRs and savings certificates of Talukder Abdul Khalek and his wife Habibun Nahar were blocked. In response to the application of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Sharif Hossain Haider issued this order on March 25.

Deputy Director of the ACC Khulna office Md. Abdul Wadud confirmed this information and said that in response to the application of the ACC, the court judge ordered to freeze bank accounts, FDRs and savings certificates worth Tk 81 million of them in IFIC Bank, NCC Bank, Basic Bank, Agrani Bank and Standard Chartered Bank. Out of this, Tk 50 million was found in the IFIC Bank Khulna branch alone.
