Earlier, as part of the non-cooperation movement called for the one-sided demand of the government’s resignation, on Sunday (August 4), around 11:15 a.m., the student crowd blocked the road at Shibbari intersection in the city. Eyewitnesses said that on Sunday afternoon, the agitators took a procession and started throwing bricks in front of Sheikh’s house on Sher Bangla Road in the city. At that time there was no police or activists in front of that house. At one stage they broke the gate and entered and caused extensive vandalism.
The attackers set fire to every floor of the building. Later, before the locals came and brought the fire under control, everything was burnt to ashes. When the fire was extinguished around 3:30 pm, several policemen and members of APBN came to the house. Later, the leaders and activists of the Jubo League were seen coming in front of the house with a protest march. Around 3:30 pm another round of attack took place at the MP’s house.
Earlier, the agitators clashed with Awami League leaders and activists around 11:30 am. According to the eyewitnesses, Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders and activists took position in front of the Awami League office on Lower Jessore Road from the morning according to the pre-announced program. Around 11:30 am, when some agitators wanted to go that way from Picture Palace intersection, Awami League leaders and activists chased them. At this time, cocktails and gunshots were heard between the two sides chasing each other. At this time, Awami League leaders and activists retreated after being chased by the agitators.
They ransacked the office and set fire to the furniture. Several motorcycles were also set on fire under the office. During the clash, several activists of Awami League were beaten and seriously injured by the agitators. Later the injured were rescued and taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Among them, city Awami League General Secretary MD A Babul Rana, Sheikh Shahjalal Sujan are in serious condition. They have been admitted to ICU at Khulna Medical College Hospital. After setting fire to the Awami League office, they vandalized the building of the Shipping Owners Group. Jubo League presidium member Sheikh Sohel is the president of the organization.
Later, a section of the agitators pelted bricks at the city building. Some glass of the building was broken. They entered the Khulna Zilla Parishad office and set fire to 4 motorcycles in front.
One of the motorcycles belonged to Yamuna TV’s Khulna correspondent Prabir Bish. They ransacked Khulna Press Club at 1.30 pm. Later at 4:30 pm another round of vandalism and fire was set inside the press club. Besides, bricks were thrown at the house of City Mayor Talukdar Abdul Khalek on Gaganbabu Road. It broke the glass of the building. Later, the army members took position in front of the house.
