Rajapur of Jhalkathi, Saturia Meherunnessa Memorial High School founded by AK Fazlul Haque, the tiger of Bengal in Saturia area of Saturia union of upazila is in such a bad condition. the school authorities are continuing to teach students in dangerous buildings, bearing in mind the danger of accidents every moment.
Sher-i Bangla AK Fazlul Haque established the Saturia Meherunnessa Memorial High School in the year 1941 in the name of his aunt at Matulalay of Sher-i Bangla AK Fazlul Haque in Saturia village. This educational institution has been spreading the light of knowledge among the people of the area with pride since its establishment.
The school has three buildings out of which 1 is a one-storied gabled building built in 1965. The other is a tinset semi-paved and double storey building constructed in 2002. The school authorities are continuing the teaching activities of about 4500 students with risk in the office in two rooms of the school and in the rest of the rooms. After the construction, the buildings have been repaired but at present the buildings are in a very fragile and dangerous condition. The plaster of the walls and roof of the building is falling off. Students are often injured when the roof falls.
Huge cracks appeared in the pillars and ceiling of the building, the iron rods inside the plasters came out. During the rainy season, the water from the roof drains. School buildings can collapse at any moment, major accidents can happen.
As there is no other building in the school, the teachers are forced to continue teaching in the dangerous building. In this, teachers and students along with parents are always in fear. As a result, the teaching activities of the students are also being disrupted.
Single parents are afraid to send their children to school. The number of students attending schools is also decreasing day by day.
Several students of the school, including Suraiya Akhter, a student of the 2nd standard, said that the plaster of the walls and roof of the building fell. Rina Akhter, acting head teacher of the school said, there are about four hundred and fifty students in my school. I am not able to teach them properly because the school building is old and dangerous. Often the ceiling collapses so the students are always in fear. They sent the teachers to the class and they said, ‘Madam Kone.’
I will conduct classes at the place. I could not accommodate them. My urgent request to education friendly government leader Sheikh Hasina is to get a new building.
Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md. Mostafa Alam said, I visited the traditional Saturia Meherunnessa Memorial High School founded by Sher-i Bangla AK Fazlul Haque and found that the condition of the building is very fragile and dangerous. It can collapse at any moment. I have applied to the higher authorities for the construction of the new building. We hope to start construction of new building in this school very soon.
