Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is going to be the next chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He is expected to take over when current chairman Greg Barkley’s term ends in November. This information has been confirmed by the Indian media “NDTV” on its own sources.

Barkley refused to serve as ICC chairman for the third term in this video message of Mangalka yesterday. Earlier, Jai Shah had expressed his desire to serve in this position. Besides, England and Australia cricket board officials have also supported Jai Shah. That is why Jai Shah’s chairmanship is very certain before the election.

Jai Shah will be the fifth Indian to serve as the ICC chief. Earlier, Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000), Sharad Pawar (2010-2012), N Srinivasan (2014-2015) and Shashank Manohar (2015-2020) served as the ICC chief.

An ICC spokesperson told the famous Australian tabloid newspaper “The Age”, “ICC chairman Greg Barclay has confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term. He will step down when his current term expires at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as ICC chairman in November 2020 before being re-elected in 2022.

He further said, ‘Current directors will now have to submit nomination papers for becoming the next chairman by August 27, 2024. If there are more than one candidate, the election will be held on December 1 this year.

The chairman is elected by the ICC directors. The chairman can only get the support of 9 out of 16 voters (51 percent). Earlier there was a provision of two-thirds support in the rules.

BCCI President Jai Shah is the only child of India’s current Home Minister Amit Shah. Jai Shah’s tenure as secretary in BCCI is still one year. If 35-year-old Jai Shah is elected ICC chairman, he will set a record. He will be the youngest chairman in the history of ICC if he takes over in November.
