 In the 12th National Assembly elections, the independent candidate of Pirojpur-1 seat, Abdur Rahim, son of District A. League president AKMA Awal and nephew Tanveer Mujeeb Abhi, led by the attack and vandalism in different places of Pirojpur Sadar Upazila, have been accused of shooting and causing riots.
In the attack, 6 shops were vandalized and a motor cycle was set on fire, injuring 7-8 leaders and workers of Awami League nominated boat candidate Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sh M Rezaul Karim.
These incidents took place in Panchapara, Kadamtala areas of Sadar Upazila of the district along with Pirojpur Municipal Town from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday.
Pirojpur District Jubo League President Aktaruzzaman Phulu said that around 3 pm independent candidate district Awami League president Awal son A. Rahim and nephew Sadar Upazila Chairman Mujibur Rahman Khalek’s son Tanvir Mujib Abhi led by 40-50 motorcycles and a micro bus, their cadres took weapons to the town. They went in front of his residence in Vasant Pool area and fired 5-6 rounds and abused him in profanity. As the main gate of the house was closed, they could not enter inside the house and left by kicking and pelting the gate with bricks.
Sheikh Sihab Uddin, Chairman of Kadamtala Union of Sadar Upazila of the district, said that around 2:15 PM on Sunday, 40-50 independent candidate Awal cadres on motorcycles vandalized the Awami League party office in Ward No. 3 of Kadamtala with weapons. Later they went towards the Panchpara market of the upazila. On the way back from there, 6 shops in Kadamtala market were vandalized.
Eyewitnesses said that around 2.30 pm on that day, under the leadership of independent candidate of Pirojpur-1 constituency and former MP AKMA Awal’s son Abdur Rahim and nephew Tanveer Mujeeb Abhi, their cadres in 40-50 motorcycles and a micro bus marched in the market with weapons. At that time they fired 3 rounds and left. This caused panic in the market. Kalu Molla, a businessman of Kadamtala market, said that some terrorists attacked Jahangir Sheikh’s hardware shop, Kalu Molla’s oil shop, Jabbar’s grocery shop, Enayet’s garage, Tapan Shahar’s sweet shop and 6 shops in the market after attacking.
District Sadar Upazila Vice Chairman SM Bayezid Hossain said that the attackers attacked my sister’s house on Balaka Road in the city.
Besides, District Fishermen’s League president and former VP Shikder Chan was shot in front of his house. At that time they had sharp weapons and hammers in their hands.
General Secretary of District Chhatra League Mohammad Ikhtekhar Mahmud Sajal said that the attackers attacked and vandalized the party office of Chhatra League and his house. At that time, Municipal Chhatra League joint general secretary Mohammad Chhabir Hossain was cut and seriously injured. At that time, when Chhabbir Hossain was taken to the district hospital for treatment, the attackers prevented him from receiving treatment there and vandalized the hospital.
3 of the injured in the attack have been admitted to Nazirpur Upazila Health Complex.
Injured Nachima Begum (38) said that her husband’s auto was vandalized and she was also beaten. At that time, the attackers took their mobile phones and money.
In this regard, the boat’s candidate, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sh M Rezaul Karim said that independent candidate AKMA Awal has become sullen and careless without getting the nomination of Awami League. He and his family have become desperate to get elected at any cost by instilling fear among voters through terror.
“Sh. Rezaul Karim said, Tanveer Mujeeb Abhi, son of Awal’s brother Mojibur Rahman Khaleek, today on hundreds of motorcycles openly paraded Kadamtala Shikdar Malli with firearms and vandalized my election office. Beat up my workers, destroyed my election office in Alamkathi. My supporter district Awami League vice-president Akhtaruzzaman Fulu went to his house and shot recklessly. District Chhatra League General Secretary Iftekhar Mahmud Sajal’s office was vandalized and his house attacked. Pirojpur Sadar Upazila Vice Chairman Bayjid Hossain’s sister’s house was attacked in Balaka Club Road by terrorist means. District Awami Matsya Convenor of Jubo League carried out a terrorist attack on former student leader Shikder Mohammad Chan’s residence with hundreds of motorcycles and cadres. They hacked Municipal Chhatra League Joint General Secretary Sabbir to death in the city. They are beating up my people in Pirojpur city with arms openly raised in motorcycle drills, which, CCTV camera footage of the city has collected. If done, it will be proved.The peace loving people of Pirojpur are terrified of terrorist attack. I demand their immediate arrest.
I have already informed the higher authorities of the government, Election Commission, Barisal departmental officers, Pirojpur senior officers and requested them to take necessary measures.
However, it was not possible to get their statements even after trying to talk to independent candidate Awal and others on the phone.
Officer in charge (OC) of Pirojpur Sadar police station. Ashikuzzaman said, why no complaint has been received in this incident, but the police operation is going on to arrest those involved in the incident. Besides, police have been deployed in different parts of the city. The situation is now under control.
Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shariful Islam said that if a complaint is received, legal action will be taken. An operation is underway to arrest those involved.
It is to be noted that in Pirojpur-1 (Nazirpur, Pirojpur Sadar and Indurkani) seats, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sh. Rezaul Karim and District Awami League President AKMA Awal are contesting as independent candidates as Awami League nominated candidates.
