In Comilla’s Barura, the local residents formed a human chain to demand the digging of canals and re-rescue of various unions including the municipal area. This human bond was celebrated on Friday 05th May at Zero Point adjacent to Barura Upazila Press Club, organized by volunteer organization Volunteers Association, conducted by Shakila Zaman, President of Women’s Rights Forum and chaired by Md. Mosharraf Ahmed. According to the said human bond – it is known – Barura Upazila has 93 square miles, 1 municipality, 15 unions and 340 villages on all four sides for the public interest. If you notice, it can be seen that currently the canals flowing over different unions of Barura Upazila have turned into a festival of occupation and the canal is about to disappear. If you look at the target, it will be seen that there are 344 spots on the Khas Khatian root in the southern part of the bridge adjacent to the municipal college road Patbazar and the former 12 spots of Khas Khatian in the canal on the north side of the bridge were the Kheyaghat which was used by boats coming from different areas of the upazila. Today it is like a garbage city and the unforgettable boat ghat is getting filled day by day due to the indulgence of squatters and for almost 4 decades the canal of Khas Khatian No. 261 is known as the new road of Barura Bazar. The huge canal surrounding the traditional municipality passes through the main road of the market from Malibari Pole to the west and the site behind the Municipal Office, TNT Office Fire Service, to the former 14-point Purankadba Mauza of No. 1 Khas Khatian. Canal shape stability cannot be found. Because the canal is disappearing due to negligence and illegal occupation. As a result, every year’s monsoon rains and the city dwellers are deprived of water. Therefore, ex-Member of Barra Municipality Kabir Ahmed, General Secretary of Volunteers Association Riazul Islam Chowdhury, Former Commissioner of Ward No. 5 Md. Zakir Hossain, Farmer of Municipal Area Billal Hossain have spoken by calling on senior officials of the government and local public representatives to recover the defunct canal soon. Farmer Mannan, farmer Jobair Hossain, volunteer organization member Israfil, poet Md. Sohail Rana of Dennagar, journalist Omar Farooq and many other prominent people. At this time, the one demand of all those present in the human chain is that the agricultural land of the area should be freed from the waterlogged environment by digging canals.
