A formal charge has been filed against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a case alleging crimes against humanity, including ordering, instigating, and inciting the genocide that took place during the July uprising. In addition to Sheikh Hasina, formal charges were filed with the International Crimes Tribunal today (Sunday) against former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former IGP of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun. After that, a hearing on the matter is underway at the International Crimes Tribunal.

A formal charge has been filed with the tribunal, accusing Sheikh Hasina of being the main instigator of the genocide that took place across the country in July-August last year.

Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam filed the formal charge at the Registrar’s Office of the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday (June 1). Other prosecutors were present at the time.

The International Crimes Tribunal is currently on trial against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and others accused of ordering and planning the shooting and killing of unarmed students and the public during the anti-discrimination student movement. The Awami League government carried out indiscriminate genocide to stop the student movement. About 1,500 people lost their lives in this movement.

Before the formal complaint was filed against ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a formal charge was filed in the killing of 6 people in Chankharpul in the capital. So far, two complaints have been filed regarding this.

Earlier, on the morning of May 12, the investigation agency submitted an investigation report on 5 charges against Sheikh Hasina in this case to the prosecution. The investigation agency submitted this report to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of the Tribunal. Later that afternoon, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam gave this information to journalists at a press conference at the Tribunal. Tajul Islam had referred to Sheikh Hasina as the ‘nucleus of the missing and the mirror’.

Along with Sheikh Hasina, an investigation report has been filed in this case, accusing former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who was the IGP during the uprising.

As per the rules, the tribunal’s investigation agency first submits the investigation report to the Chief Prosecutor’s Office. Then the Chief Prosecutor reviews the investigation report and submits it to the tribunal in the form of a formal charge. In continuation of that, it was submitted to the concerned parties today for the formation of a formal charge. Then a hearing is scheduled to be held on the matter. Now, after taking cognizance of the charges, a hearing will be held on the formation of a formal charge.

After the fall of the Awami League government in the face of the uprising on August 5 last year, the International Crimes Tribunal was reconstituted. The first case (miss case or miscellaneous case) was filed against Sheikh Hasina in the reconstituted tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity during the uprising.

Apart from this case, there are two other cases against Sheikh Hasina in the tribunal. In one of them, she is accused of disappearances and murders during the 15 and a half years of the Awami League regime. The other case is related to the killings at a Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Square in Motijheel, the capital.
