The chief adviser of the interim government. Muhammad Yunus said that the current government believes in free media and wants to see a dynamic and vibrant media in the country.

The Chief Adviser said this in an exchange meeting with the editors of 20 leading newspapers of the country at Rashtriya Guest House Yamuna on Tuesday.

After the meeting, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar briefed the journalists at the Foreign Service Academy. Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir was present at this time.

Quoting the chief adviser, Shafiqul Alam said that the government wants to see a dynamic media in the country. Everything necessary will be done for this. At the same time, he mentioned that the government is committed to the establishment of free media in the country.

In the discussion meeting, the editors proposed to cancel or amend the time limits for journalists.

Pointing out that there is no pressure on the media from the government, Deputy Press Secretary of the Chief Adviser Abul Kalam Majumder said, “It has been said to form a media commission for a vibrant and free media.” This commission will decide how the media will run in our country.

He said, ‘This commission has been proposed to make sure that no one faces obstacles or obstacles while doing journalism. The government is actively considering the formation of this commission.

On the reform of the state system, the press secretary said, the Chief Adviser recently held a meeting with the political parties and the political leaders asked Professor Yunus to complete the reform within a “reasonable time frame”.

He said, Professor Yunus asked the editors today how long the reasonable time should be. All editors agreed that the time frame for implementing reforms should be at least two years, and another noted that the interim government would set a ‘reasonable time’ for reforms.

Alam said the chief adviser pointed out that the student revolution has created an opportunity to repair the state and it should be exploited. Professor Yunus stressed on building national unity to sustain the reforms.

In the meeting, he said, the editors also talked about constitutional reform and reform of Law Commission and Public Service Commission.

The editors suggested making the advisory council more active and decentralizing power, the press secretary said, adding that they also stressed the need for a constitutional assembly to rewrite the country’s constitution.

The editors who participated in the discussion meeting suggested that the government should fix the reform program or procedure during the honeymoon period.

Bangladesh News Agency (BASS) Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief Mahbub Morshed, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, The New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, Jugantar Editor Saiful Alam, Business Standard Editor Enam Ahmed and Kalbela Editor Santosh Sharma were present in the meeting.
