Former Supreme Court Appellate Division Judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik has been handed over to the police station by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). He was handed over to Sylhet’s Kanighat police station in the early hours of Saturday (August 24). After the handover, he was being brought to the court at around 11:30 am amid tight security.
Meanwhile, former judge Shamsuddin Chowdhury handed over Manik to BGB police station, but BGB and police did not file any case against him till 12:30 pm on Saturday. Jahangir Hossain Sardar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kanighat Police Station, confirmed this information to Bangla Tribune.
He said, “After the BGB handed over the former judge to the police without any case, the police are taking him to the court under Section 54. Now the court will decide on this.
In this regard, the captain of battalion 19 BGB Lt. Col. Khondkar. Asadunnabi’s mobile phone was contacted but he did not pick up the call.
Earlier on Friday (August 23), he was arrested by the BGB while illegally fleeing to India through Kanaighat (Dana) border in Sylhet.
Meanwhile, in a video that went viral on social media Facebook, former Justice Manik was heard saying that he would give money if needed. His siblings will give. At that time, he said, ‘Did I come to this country (India) with so much difficulty to go back to Bangladesh?’
Another video shows a person holding a towel around the former judge’s neck. Another asks his name. At that time, Justice Manik told his full name and said that his home was Munshiganj.
During their questioning, this judge kept saying helplessly, ‘I had British and Bangladeshi passports along with credit cards of several banks. I was leaving the country in fear. The two young men here said that they would cross the border if they paid 15,000 taka. After paying 15 thousand rupees, those two young men took me to the Indian border. They beat me at the border and took away my mobile phone and 60-70 lakh taka. When they got sick from the beating, they lay on banana leaves and ran away.
Local Union Parishad (UP) member Nazim Uddin said former Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik tried to flee to India illegally on Friday afternoon with the help of Saddam, son of Rafiqul Hossain of Dana Patichhra village. Later he was arrested by Dana BGB members and taken into their custody. Saddam Hussain’s homestead is on the Bangladesh-India border. He entered India illegally at various times.
