The district detective police have arrested former Upazila BNP President Helal Uddin and General Secretary Parvez Ahmed in connection with the protest and clash demanding the cancellation of the newly announced BNP convening committee in Kaliakair, Gazipur. They were arrested from their respective homes in Saheb Bazar and Hijaltali in Kaliakair Upazila at around 3 am yesterday and taken to the detective office. After interrogation, former President VP Helal Uddin was released into the custody of his wife four hours after his arrest. Although Helal Uddin was released, Parvez Ahmed remains in custody.
Helal Uddin said that members of the DB and Thana police caught them from their homes at around 3 am. Later, the Superintendent of Police questioned him about yesterday’s clash. He said that he was then released into the custody of his wife.
In this regard, Kaliakair Police Station OC Abdul Mannan said, yesterday, people of Helal-Parvez group clashed with people of Nurul Islam Sikder and Anwar Hossain in Kaliakair Bazar area demanding the cancellation of the convening committee. 16 people were injured in this incident. Former president Helal Uddin and former general secretary Parvez were arrested in this incident. Although Helal Uddin was released, Parvez Ahmed remains in detention.
It is worth noting that on Saturday evening, June 14, BNP announced 8 Kaliakair upazila and municipality committees in Gazipur. In that committee, Nurul Islam Sikder, former chairman of Mouchak Union Parishad, has been made the convener of the upazila BNP, and M Anwar Hossain has been made the member secretary. Mamud Sarkar has been made the convener of Kaliakair municipality BNP and Mohsin Uzzaman has been made the member secretary. Although everyone has accepted the municipal BNP committee, the former general secretary of the upazila BNP, Parvez Ahmed, and the president of the Helal Uddin Group, are not accepting the convening committee of the upazila BNP. The leaders and activists held a protest march on Saturday night demanding the cancellation of the convening committee.
The next day, Sunday morning, June 15, former general secretary of the upazila BNP, Parvez Ahmed, and president of the Helal Uddin Group held a protest march in the Kaliakoir Sahebbazar area demanding the cancellation of the new committee. At that time, a fight broke out with the people of Nurul Islam Sikder and Anwar Hossain. 16 people were injured in this. In this incident, a case was filed at the Kaliakoir police station, mentioning six people including the former general secretary of the upazila BNP, Parvez Ahmed, and 22 unknown people.
