One person has been killed in severe floods in Feni. Several people are missing. More than 600 hundred people have been rescued. People in all areas of Phulgazi, Parashuram and Chagalnaya upazilas have been waterlogged. Roads and houses have sunk. Flood victims seek safe shelter. In this direction, the water of Muhuri, Kahua and Ceylonia rivers is flowing over 90 cm of the boundary line.
More than 40 villages of Sadar Union, Anandpur, Munsirhat, Amjadhat Union of Fulgazi Upazila and more than 45 villages including Mirzanagar, Chithlia, Buxmahmud and Town of Parshuram Upazila were submerged in water.
Apart from this, roads, ponds and crop lands of the entire upazila including Pathannagar, Radhanagar, Shubopur Union of Chagalnaya have been submerged. In some areas, the flood water has touched the roofs of people’s houses and tin rice. Residents seek shelter in such situations. Local administration and various voluntary organizations have entered the field with relief assistance for the flood victims.
On Wednesday (August 21), Parashuram Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Afroza Habib Shapla said that most of the local municipalities and upazila villages have been inundated by this terrible flood. Many people are stuck in water. Since the early hours of the day, people have been rescued and taken to safety by boats with the help of fire service members and student volunteers.
He said that about 100 people have been rescued so far. Army and Coast Guard are working on emergency rescue operations. One person has been reported missing. The upazila administration has distributed 500 packets of dry food to the victims and another 500 packets of dry food and 50 tons of rice have been prepared.
Fulgazi upazila executive officer Tania Bhuia said that most of the villages of the six unions of the upazila have been inundated in this worst flood in recent memory, many people have been trapped in water. Since Tuesday (August 20), fire service members and volunteers with the help of students have been rescuing people by boat and taking them to safety.
He said that about 300 people have been rescued in this upazila so far. Rescue operations have already started with the help of the Army and Coast Guard. One death has been reported so far. Water level is increasing with time. Upazila administration has distributed 500 packets of dry food and another 500 packets of dry food and 18 tons of rice have been kept ready.
Sub-Divisional Engineer of Feni Water Development Board Abul Kashem said, Muhuri river water is flowing 90 cm above the danger level. Heavy rains and landslides in Indian hills could make the situation more dire.
Feni Meteorological Office observer Munir Hossain said that 99 millimeters of rain has been recorded in the last 24 hours.
Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, the captain of Feni 4 BGB, said that the BGB is transporting the water-bound people to safe havens through boats and trawlers in the bordering villages. Apart from this, they are also distributing clean drinking water and emergency dry food among the rescued people.
Feni Deputy Commissioner Musammat Shahina Akhtar said, the administration is active in rescue operation and relief assistance with the help of army, BGB, coast guard, fire service members and local volunteers.
