This time a debate has started about water withdrawal from Farakka. India has said that water is released every year during the monsoons and has informed Dhaka that water has been released from Farakka.

Reports published in various newspapers say that last August 24, water supply started from Farakka. According to a top local news media of the country, 109 gates have been opened in Farakka. Some gates are opened three or four feet, some 10 or 12 feet.

According to the report, the water that comes to Bangladesh from Farakka enters Padma through Pankha Point in Chapainawabganj. The water level there was 20.5 meters on Monday. Vipatsima is 22.5 meters.

India’s statement

India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen media reports about the release of water from the Farakka Barrage. According to media reports, 1.1 million cusecs of water has flowed downstream into the Ganga and Padma through the opening of this gate.

Jaiswal said that water leakage during monsoon is normal. If there is more rain in the upper reaches of the Ganga, the water in Farakka rises.

Randhir Jaiswal said, it must be understood that Farakka is not a dam, it is only a barrage. When the water level rises to a certain height, the excess water that comes in is released. It is a structure which maintains the flow of 40 thousand cusecs of water in the Farakka Canal. This is done very carefully. Arrangements have been made for 40 thousand cusecs of extra water to go to Bangladesh.

According to Randhir, according to the protocol, all the information is given to the officials of the Joint River Commission of Bangladesh. Timely and regular information is provided. This time it was no different.

He said, many fake videos have come to our attention. A lot of slander and intimidation have also come forward so that there is misunderstanding. It needs to be confronted with real facts.
