The water of Gomti river has flowed 134 cm above the boundary line from India. Gomti river in Comilla has never held so much water before. However, the water level of the river has started decreasing since Friday (August 23) morning. On Monday (August 26) till 12 noon, 92 cm of water has receded, but the water is still flowing 42 cm above the danger line.
Comilla Water Development Board (PUBO) Executive Engineer Khan Md. Waliuzzaman confirmed this information to Jago News.
He said, ‘Due to the breaking of the Gomtir dam in Burichong area on Thursday (August 22) night, the water in the river has started decreasing since Friday morning. At present, the water level has decreased to 92 cm and is still flowing 42 cm above the flood line. If there is no rain upstream, it will fall below the danger line in the next 48 hours. But we are still not risk-free.
He also said that the collapsed Gomti Dam in Burburia area is gradually widening. At present, the river is about 200 meters wide and the water level is increasing in Burichong and Brahmanpara.
Earlier, a part of Gomti Dam collapsed in Burburia area of ​​Sholanal Union of Burichong Upazila at midnight and water started entering the locality. As a result, about 100,000 people in Burichong and Brahmanpara upazilas have become waterlogged till Saturday morning.
Hossain Mamun, a resident of Mogaltuli area of ​​Comilla city, said, “He is spending sleepless nights as the water level of Gomti river has been rising for several days. As the water in the river has risen, the city defense embankment has also softened. Can break at any moment.’
District relief and rehabilitation officer Abed Ali said that out of 17 upazilas, except Chandina, Homna and Meghna upazilas, the remaining 14 upazilas have been submerged in Ban water. According to the government, seven lakh 93 thousand 142 people have been affected in the district, but according to the private sector, it is close to one million. A total of 1 lakh 63 thousand 428 families have been affected in the district due to ongoing floods. 1 thousand 800 tons of rice has been allocated by the government for the affected people. Apart from this, 45 lakhs in cash has been allocated.
He also said that around 55,000 Banvasi people have taken shelter in 724 shelters across the district. Among them there are 20 thousand 292 men, 22 thousand 197 women, 12 thousand 505 children and 281 disabled.
