Even though the yield is good, the supply of paddy has decreased in the market of Dinajpur, the paddy district, before the end of the Boro season. As the supply of rice in the market decreases, the price is starting to increase. In the last one week, the price of boro paddy has increased from Tk 150 to Tk 200 per bag (75) in Dinajpur. Small traders and farmers said that as the season is almost over, there is not much rice left in the farmer’s house, big businessmen have bought and stored rice. They will now control the rice market.
Gopalganj Hat of Sadar Upazila is one of the largest rice markets in Dinajpur. Paddy is sold in this market on Friday and Monday. During the peak season, three to five thousand sacks of paddy are sold in this market in a single day. But yesterday Monday (July 29) went to this market, it was seen that the supply of rice has decreased. Hat lessee Monir told this representative that 5 to 600 sacks of paddy arrived in the market on Friday.
He said that the supply of paddy is gradually decreasing due to the end of the season. In this direction, the price of paddy has started to increase due to the reduced supply in the market. On Monday (July 29), Gopalganj market inquired that hybrid paddy was being sold at Tk 2,150 to Tk 2,200 per bag (75) kg, (BR-28) variety was being sold at Tk 2,500 to Tk 2,550. And Sapa Katari paddy is being sold at Tk 2,650. A week ago, hybrid paddy was sold at Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,050, BR 28 variety at Tk 2,300 to Tk 2,400 and Sapa Katari variety at Tk 2,550. In other words, the price of each bag of paddy has increased from 150 to 200 taka depending on the type. Amresh Basak, a paddy buyer at the market, said that there is not much paddy left in the farmer’s house. So the supply of paddy in the market has decreased. Due to the increase in the demand of rice in the market, they are making rice by buying rice at a higher price.
A businessman who did not wish to be named said, “We are a small business, with little capital.” We buy paddy in the market and make rice and sell it. After getting rice money, I buy rice again. When the market price is as it is, we have to sell the rice with a small profit. But the big traders have bought a lot of paddy at a relatively low price during the peak season and stored it. As the supply of rice in the market is reduced, they will now control the rice market. During Boro paddy harvesting and threshing season, paddy is sold from Tk 1,900 to Tk 2,000 per bag.
Farmer Sahrab Hossain, who came to sell paddy in the market, said, I have planted boro paddy with pesticides. The rest had to be paid by selling the paddy during the threshing season. The remaining paddy now has to be sold to meet the expenses of Aman Abad. He said, when the rice is finished in our farmer’s house, the price of rice has started increasing. According to research in the rice market, the price of rice in Dinajpur has increased by three to four rupees per kg since last ten to fifteen days. At present, in the retail market, miniket is Tk. 65 to Tk. 68 per kg, BR-26 rice is Tk. 58 to Tk. 60 per kg.
Tk. Hybrid rice is being sold at Tk.44 to Tk.45. About ten to fifteen days ago, the price of rice in Dinajpur increased by Tk 3 to Tk 4 per kg. Rice is still being sold at that increased price.
Dinajpur District Agriculture Extension Directorate Deputy Director Mo Nuruzzaman said that Boro rice is cultivated in 1 lakh 74 thousand 510 hectares of land in the district. Which is 710 hectares more than last year. This time Boro production target is set at around 8.5 lakh metric tons (in the form of rice).
