 International Mother Language Day was celebrated with due dignity on Tuesday, February 21, at the Shaheed Minar of Sashah Intellect Development School, established at Singur village of Jholam Union, Barura Upazila, Comilla District. The ceremony started with a wreath laying at the Shaheed Minar, a one-minute silence in memory of the language martyrs, the performance of the National Anthem. Sabur Badsha, chief coordinator of Sassah, Shamima Yashin, assistant principal of Sassah Intellect Development School, Shahnaz Akhtar, assistant teacher spoke in the program paying respect to all language martyrs and language soldiers. The speakers said – this day in 1952 was the first resistance for the demand of Bengali language. On that day, the streets of Dhaka were soaked in blood to preserve the dignity of the mother tongue. This logical demand of Bengali was defeated by the unjust order imposed by the colonial rule. This protest, resistance and demand of 52 was the ultimate achievement of Bengalis. The speakers also said that on November 17, 1999, UNESCO recognized the great Ekushey February as the International Mother Language, so today this day is being celebrated all over the world. Then the school students started reading rhymes and poems, Ekush and patriotic songs. Apart from this, Sabur Badsha performed music on the occasion. Assistant teacher Sumitra Rani was in charge of the program.
