Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that there was a misunderstanding about universal pension scheme, it has been removed. All the government, autonomous institutions will join under this scheme on July 1, 2025. The information about public university teachers joining pension from July 1, 2024 is not correct. This is one of their three demands. Like everyone else, they will join the pension scheme on July 1, 2025, it has been confirmed. He made this comment at a briefing at the Awami League president’s office in Dhanmondi in the capital on Saturday (July 13).

Earlier, Obaidul Quader held a meeting with a delegation of 13 members of public university teachers who were agitating to cancel the ‘Prayatya’ scheme of universal pension. Bangladesh University Teachers Association Federation President Aktarul Islam and General Secretary Professor Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan led by 13 teachers representatives participated in the meeting. Regarding the other demands of the teachers, he said, they will be resolved soon through dialogue. Later, the Secretary General of the Federation of Bangladesh Teachers’ Association and the President of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association, Professor Dr. Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan told Jago News that there was a detailed discussion on the issue of demands in the meeting. We have agreed on some issues, while there are still disagreements on some issues. We’ll get back to it ourselves. Then the next position of teachers will be clarified. In the press conference, Obaidul Quader said that there is a need for quota in the current context of the country. A cabal is trying to take advantage of the anti-quota movement.

He also said that the demands and statements of the anti-quota activists are against the constitution and principles of state governance. Women’s participation in government jobs has been dismal in the last few years due to lack of quota. Marginalized people are also left behind. Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, AFM Bahauddin Nashim, Organizing Secretary BM Mozammel Haque, Mirza Azam, Afzal Hossain, Sujit Roy Nandi, Office Secretary Biplab Barua, State Minister for Education Shamsunnahar Chapa, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Education and Culture were also present in the briefing. Dr. Central Awami League leaders including Kamal Abdul Nasser Chowdhury.
