Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md. Shahab Uddin said, following the sustainable plastic management action plan formulated by the government, efforts are being made to reduce the use of single-use plastic by 90 percent by 2026. Also, it is planned to increase plastic waste recycling to 80 percent by 2030 and reduce plastic waste generation to 30 percent by that time. The government has formulated a three-year action plan to stop the use of single-use plastics in coastal areas. Use of eco-friendly and bio-degradable materials will be increased. The environment minister said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the seminar on solid waste management organized at Pan Pacific Hotel Sonargaon today. Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Farhina Ahmed, spoke as special guests at the seminar, Deputy Minister of the Ministry, Habibun Nahar, President of the Parliamentary Committee on the Ministry, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Secretary of the Local Government Department, Muhammad Ibrahim, Director General of the Department of Environment, Dr. Abdul Hamid, Environment , Ministry of Forest and Climate Change Additional Secretary Environment Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Chief Executive of Dhaka North City Corporation Md Salim Reza and retired professor of BUET Dr. Ijaz Hossain and others. The Environment Minister said that hazardous waste management rules, 2021 have been formulated in 2021 for the purpose of solid waste management. Medical waste regulations are being updated. The Government’s National 3R Policy for Waste Management aims to completely eliminate waste disposal on open land, rivers, drains, canals and plains and encourage recycling of waste through mandatory segregation of waste at source and also create a market for recycled products. Pollution control requires law enforcement as well as the cooperation of the general public. The Minister expressed optimism that it is possible to achieve a sustainable solution to the problem of solid waste in the near future with the cooperation of the public. In the program, the regulations related to solid waste management and the action plan of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change were presented by the Ministry’s Deputy Secretary Mohammad Abdul Wadud Chowdhury and the Deputy Director of the Department of Environment Abdullah Al Mamun. In this regard, the executive director of West Concern, Abu Hasanat Md. Maqsood Sinha presented the models and recommendations of different countries, Additional Secretary Mustakim Billah Faruqi presented the plans of the local government department. Also, the representatives of various government and private departments pledged to do their respective responsibilities properly in solid waste management.
