The shopkeepers’ crime was that they occupied the sidewalk and arranged flower beds, which is not legal. Although they have been selling flowers by sitting on the pavement for a long time. They get into a lot of trouble with such legal ‘swords’ on Valentine’s Day.
On Tuesday afternoon, the mobile court conducted an operation to clear the sidewalks of Brahmanbaria municipal area. At that time, along with other raids, two flower sellers who were sitting with flowers on the footpath adjacent to the district registrar’s office were fined 1000 taka along with seven days imprisonment. District Administration Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Rintu Vikas Chakma conducted the raid. The two jailed flower sellers are Uttam Karmakar (40), a resident of Kazipara in the municipal area, and Raju Malakar (22), a resident of Madhyapara. Each was sentenced to imprisonment for seven days along with a fine of one thousand rupees and three more days in default of payment.
Mohammad Roni, the owner of a flower shop named Choya, said, “We have been doing business here for a long time. Because of Valentine’s Day, there were more flowers in the shop than usual. If I had known earlier, I would not have bought so many flowers in the shop. I have a loss of 50-60 thousand rupees.
Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Rintu Vikas Chakma said, “An operation has been conducted here to clear the footpath encroachment. Because this footpath has been occupied by flower sellers for a long time. This campaign was conducted as a continuation of the regular campaign. They have been jailed and fined several times recently.
