Language soldier Chunnu Mia not yet received official recognition

Reza-e-Karim Chowdhury Chunnu Mia, the only language soldier of Bhola, was born in 1931 in the house of Abdul Jabbar Mia of Qutuba Union of Borhanuddin Upazila of Bhola. This Bhasha Sainik was elected Member of Central and Provincial Assemblies (MLA) in 1970 elections. He was the first organizer of the Bhola Liberation War. Besides, he was one of the members of the constitution making committee of independent Bangladesh. Sadside this man taught without pay in Borhanuddin Secondary School and Abdul Jabbar College. This person with a colorful career left the world on Friday, March 2, 2007. 7-8 years ago, the local residents gave a memorandum to the then Deputy Commissioner Belayet Hossain demanding the preservation of Chunnu Mia’s memory. But despite assurances of implementation of the demand, it remains elusive. Despite the passage of 71 years, the conscious people of Dwip district demand the recognition and preservation of the memory of language soldier Reza-e-Karim Chowdhury Chunnu Mia.The full name of this language soldier is Reza-e-Karim Chowdhury Chunnu. But he is better known as Chunnu Sir. According to his personal diary and history of language movement, he got involved in language movement at the age of 19 while studying at Dhaka College. After Jinnah declared Urdu as the state language in 1952, the fire of rebellion ignited in him. Then he and one of his classmates immediately contacted the VP of Dhaka College Iqbal Ansar Henry and declared solidarity with the leaders of the All-Party National Language Struggle Council and participated in the language movement.
According to his diary, on February 21, 1952, the East Pakistan government issued Section 144 in Dhaka city in the afternoon. The student representatives had already decided to break Article 144. According to Chunnu Mia, we knew that if we violated Article 144 and marched, we would surely be shot. Then the immense love for my mother’s language inspired me to go to the procession. I suddenly remembered that if I go to the procession and get martyred tomorrow, my relatives may not find my body. Thinking about this, I sat down at night and wrote my full name and address on a white paper and put it in my pocket. So that my dead body can be delivered to my relatives according to this address.
From the morning of February 21, 2020, as per the suggestion of the student leaders, the procession of 8/10 people started. He was in the procession of the third batch of their college. When the procession reached the Kalabhavan, many others were arrested and taken to the police outpost. At night they have to stay at the outpost. In the morning, the police took him and others to the court in a police van. They were taken to the Central Jail within an hour without appearing in court. After a month of imprisonment, he saw the open sky on March 21. In 1971, Chunnu Mia Bholer organized the freedom fighters and served as guardian in the freedom war. Chunnu Mia was elected MLA from Awami League in 1970. At that time, he did not limit himself as a public representative, in addition to teaching in 4 schools, he also taught at Abdul Jabbar College even as a graduate. His book on language movement and liberation war “Ananya Sadhan” was appreciated by all but the manuscript “Decline of Khekshial” could not be published during his lifetime. Regarding recognition and preservation of memory, Chunnu Mia’s elder son Kabir Chowdhury and younger son Mahabub-ul-Alam Chowdhury said, “We have heard about the glorious role of the language movement from the father’s mouth. At that time, he did not join the movement thinking about recognition, memory preservation or not. Joined the movement for mother tongue Bengali. Now if the state deems it necessary then subpoenaing the jail records of 1952 will address the issue. Mayor Alhaj of Borhanuddin Municipality. Rafiqul Islam has announced that a newly constructed road will soon be named after linguist Chunnu Miar. Bhola-2 (Borhanuddin-Daulatkhan) Member of Parliament Ali Azam Mukul said, Chunnu sir is my favorite teacher. In the name of sir, an initiative was taken to build a beautiful toran at the entrance of Borhanuddin Upazila. But the initiative was shelved after the Bhola-Charfashan road widening plan. Immediately after the widening of the road, the bridge will be constructed at the entrance of Borhanuddin Upazila.
