Illegal brick kilns have been going on in Kushtia for years. The leaders of the brick kiln association collected the subscription from the kiln owners and with this money the administration and environment department managed the burning of trees. As a result, the polluting gas, heat and ash of the river are spreading to the surrounding area causing great damage to the environment, local farmers including children and the elderly are facing extreme losses. According to the list of Department of Environment, there are 161 brick kilns in the district. Among them, only 18 have environmental clearance. All 143 have no approval ie illegal. Wood is being burned in these brick kilns, and the topsoil of the agricultural land is being used. Locals complain that these illegal brick kilns are being operated under the nose of the administration, but no legal action is being taken. These illegal brick kilns are managed by the Department of Environment and related parties. Many farmers including Robkul, Alam, Sohag of the area adjacent to the brickyard said that earlier there was a lot of paddy in the land. But after 2 to 3 years of brick kiln next door, paddy is not good anymore. So many people are forced to cultivate tobacco in the land. Many other farmers said that the green leaves of the trees in the area have now turned black due to the black smoke of the tide. No more fruit can grow on the tree. When he was young, he fell into a storm. So you have to buy fruit from the market and eat it. I used to eat the fruit of my own tree. I can’t eat since I have diarrhea. The government should close these kilns quickly. On the condition of not revealing the name of the 6 upazilas of Kushtia, the brick kiln owners said that our association takes more or less subscription money. They know better what gives where. It is necessary to spend less and more here and there, including administration. The whole thing was seen by the General Secretary of the Bricklayer Owners Association, Professor Zia and two others. Habibul Basar, assistant director of Kushtia, Department of Environment, said, “It is not true that illegal brick kilns will be run by managing our money, we are conducting raids on illegal brick kilns.” The operation is continuing to the best of our ability. Even if we cannot do it regularly due to manpower shortage, this worker said that the operation will be conducted again if complaints are received. Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Islam said that the administration will take a strict stand against illegal brick kilns. Brick kilns with wood to protect the environment. It must be stopped at any cost.
