That Eoin Morgan said goodbye to international cricket a few days ago. In his place, Jos Buttler has been given the responsibility of captaining England in the shorter formats (ODIs and T20Is). This time he said goodbye to domestic cricket too. In other words, Morgan retired from all forms of cricket.
After international cricket, Morgan could not perform well in domestic cricket as well. It was mainly because of that that the 36-year-old England World Cup-winning captain retired from all forms of cricket.
He confirmed this in a statement on Monday. Morgan had an illustrious cricket career spanning nearly two decades. In a statement announcing his retirement, he wrote, ‘I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket with great pride. After much thought, it felt like the time was right for me to step away from the game. This game has given me so much over the years. Moved to England in 2005 to attend Middlesex. Finally playing for Pearl Royals in SA20, I enjoyed every moment.’
Notably, Morgan’s last T20 match for the Pearl Royals against the Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s franchise tournament SA20. Here he has scored 128 runs at an average of 21.33 in 7 matches. Made a half century.
He bid farewell to international cricket in June 2022. He was also a member of the 2010 T20 World Cup winning England team. Later in the World Cup under his leadership, England played in the final. Although they could not become champions.
His career started in Ireland in 2003. Morgan made his debut for the Irish in international cricket in 2006. Later he moved to England and started playing for England in 2009.
In 2015, Morgan was given the responsibility of captaining England. Morgan has played in 248 ODIs, 16 Tests and 115 international T20 matches. He has a total of 16 centuries in ODIs as well.
Morgan also said, ‘Even though I am calling the end of my playing career, I will still be involved with the game. Will work with broadcasters in international and franchise tournaments as a commentator and analyst.’
