Environment Minister sought UK and GCA’s support in climate adaptation activities

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin said that the implementation of NAP will require 230 billion dollars, a large part of which will be collected from international climate finance. He hoped the UK government would help achieve the steps identified in the NAP. He said the Bangladesh government recently approved the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan (2022-2041) and aims to shift Bangladesh’s trajectory from vulnerability to climate resilience. The minister hoped that the GCA would help the Bangladesh government in the adaptation process through technical assistance. The environment minister said these things at an inter-ministerial round table meeting titled “Adaptation Action in Bangladesh” held at the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy on Sunday. The environment minister said that there are social, moral and economic imperatives to quickly adapt to the changing climate. Bangladesh has taken various steps to implement the ambitious adaptation agenda. The National Adaptation Plan (2023-2050) is a roadmap and framework for implementing medium and long-term adaptation activities in Bangladesh. It is helping to build a climate-resilient nation through effective adaptation strategies. It will develop climate-resilient agriculture, infrastructure and other socio-economic sectors through inclusive and ecosystem-based adaptation, improved governance, enhanced climate finance and transformative capacity-building, and innovation. Robert Chatterton Dickson; Chief Executive Officer of GCA Professor Dr. Patrick Verkuijen, Bangladesh Deputy Country Director, Asian Development Bank; Director of International Center for Climate Change and Development and Advisor of Global Center on Adaptation Professor Dr. Salimul Haque and GCA Distinguished Fellow and former Special Envoy of CVF Bangladesh Presidency Abul Kalam Azad spoke at the event. Director General of the Multilateral Economic Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Fayyaz Murshid Qazi moderated the round table meeting. During the open discussion, representatives of various international organizations spoke about the implementation of the adaptation plan in Bangladesh. Earlier, Deputy Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Habibun Nahar attended an agreement signing ceremony of “Bangladesh-The United Kingdom Agreement on Climate Change” held at the Foreign Service Academy.
