Eco-tourism facilities will be enhanced by protecting biodiversity in Bandarban – Environment Minister

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin said that the local forest department will take all necessary measures including planting trees so that local and foreign tourists coming to Bandarban can enjoy the immense natural beauty here. Various types of trees, including the beauty-mandated krishnachura, palash, will be planted in large quantities. This tree will be planted on both sides of the road. These programs will be implemented in coordination with the concerned authorities and locals.

The Environment Minister said these things in a meeting held at the Nilgiris rest house after visiting the forest areas under the Bandarban Forest Division and Bandarban Pulpwood Plantation Division on Thursday (March 9) to check the eco-tourism potential.

The Forest Minister said that the people of the local ethnic groups should take initiatives to raise awareness among them to protect the biodiversity by cultivating jum, and to prevent fire in the mountains. Government will create livelihood supportive environment to improve their quality of life. The minister said that the government will plant trees on a large scale in the treeless areas of the reserved 1 lakh 85 thousand acres of Bandarban forest. If the mountains are covered with trees, there will be water, and if there is water, humans and other animals can live. Mentioning that it is one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the world, the minister said, the biodiversity here will be protected by involving the local people.

Among others, Bandarban Army Region Region Commander Brigadier General Md. Ziaul Haque NDC, AFWC, PSC, Principal Conservator of Forests Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chittagong Region Conservator of Forests Vipul Krishna Das, Divisional Forest Officer of Lama Forest Division Md. Ariful Haque Belal, Bandarban were present. Divisional Forest Officer of Pulpwood Forest Division Md. Mahmudul Hasan and Divisional Forest Officer of Bandarban Forest Division Haque Mahbub Morshed and others.
