Those concerned say that about 1,000 megawatts of electricity is being added to the national grid from the Ashuganj power plant every day. And one of the country’s urea fertilizer producing company, Ashuganj Fertilizer Factory is sending fertilizer to the seven districts covered. They also said that there is more than 18 thousand crores of trade in Ashuganj’s power plants and fertilizer factories. Businessmen say that this city on the banks of the Meghna river has now become the lifeline of the economy of the entire district. The people concerned said that mainly because of the river port, business has expanded. Daily transactions in these businesses are more than 50 crore rupees. And at least 15 thousand people have been employed. Ashuganj upazila with an area of 67.59 square kilometers is the smallest upazila of Chittagong division. The seaport built around the Meghna river that flows through this upazila has changed the economy and the living standards of the people here. According to legend, Ashuganj was founded in 1898. On the banks of the Meghna, the Ganj was developed based on the sale of jute and Aush paddy. Ashuganj was named after that. And rice and rice are one of the business centers that have been built around this Meghna river. More than 15 crore rupees are transacted daily in these two businesses. A paddy market has been sitting at VOC Ghat in Meghna for more than a hundred years. This rice market is considered to be the largest market in the eastern part of the country. Every morning, VOC Ghat becomes bustling with the hustle and bustle of paddy buyers and sellers. Paddy trading goes on from morning till noon. Different varieties of paddy are available in Mokam. One of which is BR-28, BR-29, BR-49 and BR-22. Daily rice worth 5 to 6 crore rupees is sold in Ashuganj Mokam.
