An influential group has been extracting sand from the river Gomti with illegal dredgers for a long time, showing a thumb to the party influence and administration through dredging in Malishail village of Kompaniganj area of Nabipur West Union of Muradnagar Upazila of Comilla. In the meantime, they have sold soil worth several crores of rupees and now their fingers have become banana trees, the locals complain. Although the Paubo Executive Engineer is not aware of the fact that the soil has been cut in the river for the last 3 years, the local administration says that the dredging activities have been stopped several times. For the past 3 years, the dominant cycle has wiped out the existence of Gomti pastures and crop lands in the north and south thirty villages of Nabipur West Union. The common people and farmers of the two villages are completely helpless to the dominant clique. Not only that, they have lost the language of common people’s protest under the influence of power. It is alleged that no one has the courage to speak against this sand extraction, even if the soil of the farmers’ pasture land is looted, no one has the language to say anything. Helpless, the farmers have to sell all their paddy land to the dominant clique at a nominal price. Farmers of 30 areas including Adam Ali, Abu Mucha, Dhanu Mia, Abdul Karim complained and said that we used to make a living by farming on our own land on the banks of the river. But now the way these sand mining influencers are mining the soil and sand of fodder crop land, all our land will be lost in the river and we will become destitute. Muradnagar Upazila River Protection Committee President and Muradnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Alauddin Bhuiyan admitted the issue of soil removal from Gomti river and said, “Before this, I myself stopped the soil removal activities several times. I don’t know if the soil is being cultivated again at present. Necessary measures will be taken again if soil excavation is in progress. Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman, Executive Engineer of Comilla Water Development Board, expressed his surprise that soil has been cut from Gomti river for 3 years and said, “I don’t know about sand extraction with dredgers.
