Assam’s National Institute of Technology (NIT) has sent a Bangladeshi student back to the country for giving ‘love’ emoji to an anti-India post on social media. The local police confirmed the matter last Tuesday (August 27).

Assam’s Cachar district superintendent of police Numal Mahatta claimed it was “not repatriation”. The student was sent back after consultation with Bangladesh authorities.

SP said, Maisha Mehzabeen is a fourth semester student of Electronics and Communication Department of National Institute of Technology, Silchar, Assam. He was sent to Bangladesh through Sutarkandi Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Karimganj district last Monday.

SP Mahatta told Indian news agency PTI that Mehzabeen had responded to an anti-India post by his senior Shahadat Hussain Alfi with a ‘love’ emoji on Facebook. Shahadat left India after completing his course six months ago and is now living in Bangladesh.

However, the Indian police officer claimed that Mehzabeen himself had requested the NIT authorities to allow him into the country.

When asked whether this Bangladeshi student will be able to go to India again to complete his course, SP Mahatta said that it is not possible to say whether he will come back and complete his studies or not.

Currently 70 Bangladeshi students are studying in Silchar NIT. Among them, 40 are Hindus, SP said.

He said, I personally met these students and requested them not to do any ‘wrongdoing’ or engage in any anti-India activities.

Meanwhile, Hindu Rakshi Dal spokesperson Shubashish Chowdhury told PTI that they noticed the anti-India post posted by the former student of Silchar NIT and asked the police to take necessary action.

He said, we forwarded some anti-India posts, which originated from Rajshahi University in Bangladesh. She (Mehzabeen) showed her support with a love emoji in one such post.
