Bahar’s sudden death disrupts newspaper distribution in Noakhali

Bahar Mia (46), an honest, soft-spoken newspaper distributor from Noakhali city, has passed away due to lung infection (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un). On Sunday (May 4), at 11:30 pm, after the funeral prayers at Baitul Aman Jame Mosque in Paschim Ekhlashpur village of Ekhlashpur union in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali, Bahar’s body was buried in the family graveyard of his home. Earlier, on Saturday night, he was taken to a hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment, where his oxygen level dropped and Bahar died at 3 pm on Sunday. Bahar Mia, a newspaper distributor, is the son of Ruhul Amin of Paschim Ekhlashpur village of Begumganj upazila. At the time of his death, he left behind a wife, two sons and a daughter, along with numerous relatives. Local dignitaries and journalists from print and electronic media working in the district were present at Bahar Mia’s funeral prayer.

Journalists working in the district said that Bahar, a well-known person in the district town, was an honest and smiling person. In the sun, rain, storm and even in the bitter cold, he used to deliver newspapers regularly to every government and private office, journalist, press club, and political office in the city, wrapping a book of newspapers. After he fell ill and was admitted to the hospital on April 27, newspaper sales were disrupted in Bahar’s absence. On the other hand, Maijdi Bazar Muladhara Enterprise was also sold off on May 1. This has put the journalists and newspaper readers of the district town in extreme trouble.

Channel 24 journalist Suman Bhowmik said that Bahar Mia, a newspaper salesman, was a very sweet-spoken, cheerful, humble and polite person. On April 27, he was suddenly admitted to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital with a severe cough. After a week of treatment there, doctors’ tests revealed that he had cancer cells in his body. He was taken to Dhaka for advanced treatment and died there on Sunday afternoon. His death brought grief to all quarters, including journalists and newspaper subscribers.
