Shariatpur District Awami League and Jazira Upazila Awami League celebrated the 49th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Leaders of Awami League said that after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed by his family in 1975, Awami League has been observing the day. After the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, Awami League leaders and activists went into hiding. In the last few days, sculptures and murals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman have been vandalized in different parts of the country. Awami League leaders, activists and supporters held protest marches at several places.

The death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was organized on Thursday at the initiative of Upazila Awami League at the residence of former Vice President of Shariatpur District Awami League Mubarak Ali Sikdar. Speakers in the meeting said that anti-independence circles and foreign powers have conspired to force Sheikh Hasina to leave the country. The present leaders and workers took an oath in the discussion meeting to struggle in a democratic way and bring Sheikh Hasina back to the country with unity. They also vowed to stand by the people of the country at this time of crisis.

I could not have imagined that Bangabandhu’s honor would be hurt like this in the name of anti-discrimination movement. We want to come together on Bangabandhu’s death anniversary and turn grief into strength. We will build a movement from the field level.
