18 thousand crores of trade at Ashuganj port by sea, road and railway. Ashuganj Upazila of Brahmanbaria is well known throughout the country for power plants and fertilizer factories. Those concerned say that about 1,000 megawatts of electricity is being added to the national grid from the Ashuganj power plant every day. And one of the country’s urea fertilizer producing company, Ashuganj Fertilizer Factory is sending fertilizer to the seven districts covered. They also said that there is more than 18 thousand crores of trade in Ashuganj’s power plants and fertilizer factories. Businessmen say that this city on the banks of the Meghna river has now become the lifeline of the economy of the entire district. The people concerned said that mainly because of the river port, business has expanded. Daily transactions in these businesses are more than 50 crore rupees. And at least 15 thousand people have been employed. Ashuganj upazila with an area of 67.59 square kilometers is the smallest upazila of Chittagong division. The seaport built around the Meghna river that flows through this upazila has changed the economy and the living standards of the people here. According to legend, Ashuganj was founded in 1898. On the banks of the Meghna, the Ganj was developed based on the sale of jute and Aush paddy. Ashuganj was named after that. And rice and rice are one of the business centers that have been built around this Meghna river. More than 15 crore rupees are transacted daily in these two businesses. A paddy market has been sitting at VOC Ghat in Meghna for more than a hundred years. This rice market is considered to be the largest market in the eastern part of the country. Apart from Brahmanbaria, the beparis brought the rice of the farmers of at least 7 surrounding districts to Mokam. Every morning, VOC Ghat becomes bustling with the hustle and bustle of paddy buyers and sellers. Paddy trading goes on from morning till noon. Different varieties of paddy are available in Mokam. One of which is BR-28, BR-29, BR-49 and BR-22. Daily rice worth 5 to 6 crore rupees is sold in Ashuganj Mokam.
Also, rice business is busy in Ashuganj around the time of rice harvest. There are about 200 chatal mills in the district, more than half of which are in Ashuganj. From these mills, rice worth more than 10 crore rupees is marketed in different parts of the country every day. 10,000 to 12,000 people have been employed in the chatals. Ashuganj Upazila Chatal mill owner Kazi Asad said, our rice business is also doing well around the rice season. Every day at least 10 crore worth of rice is marketed in different places including Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet. If the government cooperates and banks give loans on easy terms, then the business of paddy and rice will expand further. Besides, the work of many more people can be resourced. Meanwhile, the business of various construction materials including fertiliser, rod and cement has become strong at Ashuganj ferry port around the river port. These businesses are also being traded in large amounts every day. Cargo ships from various places including Chittagong and Narayanganj came to Ashuganj river port. About 1,000 workers have been employed in loading and unloading goods from ships to trucks. Each worker earns 500 to 700 taka per day. Businessmen said that the trade settlement has developed in Ashuganj mainly due to the connection of road, sea and railway. Traders can bring goods for business from different places including Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet using the seaport. Besides, the products of various companies arriving at the port can be easily sent to different parts of the country by road and sea. Transport rental business has also developed in the transport of these goods. Every day, hundreds of trucks rush to different destinations with goods from Bandao. However, the river port that has accelerated the economy of the entire district has not been touched by development. Ashuganj seaport was declared ‘port of call’ in 2008 to expand inter-country trade after domestic trade. Then in 2011, for the first time, the cargo of Palatana Power Plant in Tripura, India was transported through Akhaura land port using this sea port. Later, under the maritime protocol agreement between Bangladesh and India, Indian goods were transported using Ashuganj river port and Akhaura land port in several stages. However, there are only two jetties in the river port causing delays in unloading goods from ships. Besides, the port’s only warehouse was built to store Indian goods. As a result local businessmen are not able to use it either. There is no dockyard nearby.
Golam Hossain, President of Ashuganj City Industry and Merchant Association said, Ashuganj is now the business center of the entire district due to good geographical location and communication system. 50 crore rupees are transacted in various businesses here every day. According to this, the annual trade is 18 thousand crore rupees. Many people got employment. Everything happened because of the seaport. Therefore, if the infrastructure of the seaport can be developed, then the trade will increase and double. In this regard, Ashuganj and Bhairabazar River Port Deputy Director Rezaul Karim said, ‘A container terminal is being ported in Ashuganj. From this port, the containers will come directly from Mongla and Chittagong to Ashuganj by inland route. As there will be a jetty here, there will also be facilities for automatic movement of goods. Rezaul Karim said, “Also, we are building a modern cargo jetty here. Where there will be arrangements for storage as well as movement of products. These works will start soon.
