The court sentenced Kajal Akhtar (14), a popular eighth grade student in Damudaya upazila of Shariatpur, to death of her lover and life imprisonment to three other accused in the murder case after gang rape. At the same time, each accused has been fined two lakh rupees. Shariatpur Women and Children Torture Prevention Tribunal judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar announced this verdict today at 2 pm on Wednesday.
The accused sentenced to death is Babu Chowkidar (25), son of Tajul Islam Chowkidar of Bara Naogaon village of Damudya upazila. The accused who have been sentenced to life imprisonment are Jewel Khan (19) son of Azgar Ali Khan of the same village, Farooq Sardar (24) son of Bachchu Sardar and Tanveer Hossain Shamim (24) son of Badsha Mia Sardar of Charbhoira village.
According to the charge sheet of the case and court sources, Babu Chowkidar had a love relationship with Kajal Akhter, the eighth grade student daughter of chicken trader Alauddin Chhayal of Kulkuri village of Damudya upazila. Several times they have physical intercourse. At one point, Kajal pressures Babu for marriage. But Babu was not willing to marry Kajal. On October 21, 2020, around 7:30 PM, Babu Chowkidar called Kajol in a planned manner and raped her in the garden next to the house. Later, when Babu’s associates Jewel Khan, Farooq Sardar and Tanveer Hossain Shamim tried to rape Kajal in turn, Kajal screamed. Later they all strangled Kajal and threw her body in the canal. The next morning, the police recovered Kajol’s body from the canal 100 yards away from the house with her hands, feet and face bound. Kajol’s father Alauddin Chayal filed a case at Damudya Police Station as the plaintiff in this incident. Soon after the case, the police arrested Babu Chowkidar, Jewel Khan, Farooq Sardar and Tanveer Hossain Shamim. Among them, except Tanveer Hossain Shamim, the remaining three accused gave a confessional statement to the first class magistrate. After investigating the case, the police gave the charge sheet to the court on February 28, 2021. On September 20, 2021, the court formed the charge and started the trial. After taking the testimony of 20 witnesses, the court announced the judgment of the case at 1 pm today. Although the plaintiff is satisfied with the verdict, the defendant has said that he will appeal.
Advocate for the state. Firoz Ahmed said that the rape and murder case of Kishori Kajol is a hotly debated incident. The court has set a precedent by sentencing the accused. We are satisfied with this verdict. Advocate Shah Alam, the lawyer for the defendant, said that the defendant could not be satisfied with the verdict. The verdict will be appealed to the high court.
