 Miscreants tried to kill Awami League’s nominated candidate Hekmat Sikder, Chairman of Sagardighi Union Parishad of Ghatail Upazila of Tangail. During this time, he managed to escape and save his life, this candidate nominated by Awami League. On Tuesday (February 21) night, the miscreants hired by rival candidates in Karimganj Nayapara area of the union caused the incident. In this incident, Gopalpur Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Md. Sohail Rana visited the spot. Local Sajeda, Khodeja, Himmat Sikder, Ritu Sikder and Shahnaz Parveen have said that the three-time elected UP Chairman Hekmat Sikder was at the peak of popularity in the area, so the anti-Awami faction got jealous and attacked him to kill him. Elopathari beat up his family members and workers including his wife, son and niece. About 8-10 people were injured.

About the attack, Hekmat Sikder said that on Tuesday night, when he went to attend a social event with some associates, the hired miscreants of independent chairman candidate Habibullah Bahar, Shahidul Islam Shaheed and Shahadat Sikder ambushed him with guns and indigenous weapons. While he managed to escape, 15-20 motorcycles of his accomplices and his personal private car were vandalized. Later, in the dead of night, unable to identify the chairman, more than three hundred miscreants hired by rival candidates attacked his and his relatives’ houses and vandalized and looted them. During this time, the miscreants looted around fifty lakh rupees including cash and gold ornaments. When the independent chairman candidate Habibullah Bahar was called on the phone, he refused to talk about it. Ghatail Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md. Abdul Haque said that a case has been registered in the police station. Efforts are on to arrest the accused.
