Bangladesh in the historical movement of the student population has led to the collapse of the dominant Awami League government. In the face of protests, Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 and left the post of Prime Minister. This incident is motivating the students of Pakistan, especially the supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Now they are also hoping for a revolution by holding the hands of students like Bangladesh.
The verified Twitter handle of Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has posted several times mentioning Bangladesh in the past few days. Among them, in a post on August 7, the party drew a direct comparison between Bangladesh and Pakistan’s situation.
The post attached to Sheikh Hasina’s photo reads, ‘What happened in Bangladesh when? On July 1, university students started protesting against the quota system. On July 16, the protests intensified when news of the death of six people spread. On July 18, the government panicked and shut down the Internet, but the movement did not stop.
On July 21, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh banned job quotas, but the protesters did not stop the protests. Because they thought it was a temporary decision. Finally on August 4 (actually August 5) the movement became so intense that Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and flee.
Referring to these incidents, the post said, ‘If you see any similarity with the situation in Pakistan, it is not a coincidence or it is not long before the exact same situation develops in Pakistan. A similar incident happened in January 2024, just a month before the elections in Pakistan. Now the question is, will the group occupying Pakistan learn from these signs of Allah Ta’ala?
In another post, Imran Khan himself praised the student movement in Bangladesh and the role of the army at that time. The post from his verified Twitter handle said, ‘The way the Bengali people have freed themselves from the oppressive system through unity and determination to protect their rights and democracy is commendable. The manner in which the Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh handled the situation in a non-political manner in the entire movement should also be appreciated.
According to Imran Khan, the army as a professional institution and its chief must remain ‘apolitical’ in such a situation.
Insaf Students Federation (ISF), a student organization of PTI, has called for anti-government protests across Pakistan, taking inspiration from these incidents in Bangladesh. They announced this in a press conference on August 9. That video was shared by PTI leader Maz Malik and Imran Khan’s spokesperson Sahibzada Jahangir. It has also been reposted on PTI’s official X handle.
According to the post, Insaf Students Federation has started a movement against human rights violations in Pakistan. Just as the students of Bangladesh overthrew the fascist regime, the students of Pakistan will soon bring about change.
