Comprehensive reforms to be brought to primary education by utilizing Japan’s experience: State Minister Bobby Hajjaj

Primary and Mass Education State Minister Bobby Hajjaj said that the government has undertaken comprehensive reform programs to make Bangladesh’s primary education system modern, skill-based and child-friendly. To this end, cooperation has been sought in the successful experience of Japan’s education system, curriculum development, teacher training and enhancing administrative skills.

He said these things during a courtesy call on a high-level delegation led by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Bangladesh Chief Representative Takahashi Junko at the State Minister’s office in Dhaka today.

The State Minister said that we are currently working on formulating a new curriculum for primary education. In this, special emphasis is being given to improving the quality of civic education, sports education, cultural education, mathematics and science education in grades four and five and ensuring a challenging and enjoyable learning environment for students.

The State Minister also said that Japan’s civic education is praised worldwide. We want to learn from Japan’s experience to instill a sense of responsibility, discipline, morality and civic values ​​among our students.

Referring to the plan to establish ‘Math Labs’ in primary schools, the State Minister said, “Math Labs will be established in primary schools of the country step by step to make mathematics education more attractive and technology-based like science labs. JICA’s technical assistance, training and advice in this regard is very important.”

Bobby Hajjaj said, as part of structural reforms in primary education, Bangladesh is reviewing the education administration systems of Thailand and Turkey. Initiatives have been taken to upgrade the responsibilities, accountability, performance evaluation (KPI) and monitoring systems of field-level offices to international standards.

The members of the JICA delegation expressed their interest in continuing the ongoing cooperation in the development of primary education in Bangladesh. They discussed possible cooperation in curriculum development, teacher training, volunteer activities, capacity building of education administration and creating a child-friendly learning environment.

Additional Secretary (Development) of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Md. Mokhlesur Rahman, Joint Secretary (Planning) Md. Chaiful Islam, Senior Assistant Secretary Md. Iqbal Hasan, Senior Representative of JICA Bangladesh Monikawa Yuko and other officials were present at the time.
