Md. Moniruzzaman,Mymensingh Correspondent: A discussion meeting and press conference have been held demanding the protection of the traditional Gohata field of Trishal Municipality in Mymensingh and the cancellation of the proposal to build a commercial market there. The program was organized on Tuesday (June 23) afternoon at the Trishal Gohata field by local farmers, businessmen, conscious citizens and people from different classes and professions. The speakers alleged that an initiative has been taken to build a commercial market in this largest and century-old traditional Gohata of Trishal Upazila, where regular cattle, goat, sheep and vegetable markets are held. To this end, they claimed that a tender has been called for the construction of 6 market houses at the initiative of Trishal Municipality Administrator and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Arafat Siddiqui. The speakers said that Gohata is not just a market, it is part of the century-old tradition of the region and one of the heartlands of the local economy. Thousands of farmers and businessmen from different areas of the upazila come here with livestock and agricultural products every market. Currently, there is no suitable alternative to Gohata. As a result, if a market is built in the field, the market will be closed and thousands of farmers and small traders will lose the opportunity to sell their products at fair prices and face a livelihood crisis. In addition, traders will be forced to set up markets on the road and nearby areas, which will cause severe traffic congestion and public suffering. The speakers demanded that the tender process for building a market in Gohata field be immediately suspended, the field kept open and the development project implemented at another suitable place. Otherwise, they warned that a larger movement program will be announced in the future if this initiative is tried to be implemented against public opinion. Former student leader Rukunuzzaman Sarkar Rahat addressed the press conference and local residents Mashiur Rahman Deepak, Umar Faruk, Matiur Rahman Moti, Maulana Abu Taher and local resident Ruhul Amin Mandal along with local dignitaries were present.
