Touhid Hossain Sarkar : Bangladesh Workers Welfare Federation Central President Advocate Atiqur Rahman and General Secretary Laskar Md. Taslim have expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the decision to cancel the license of Ad-Din Medical College Hospital.
In a joint statement, they said, “For decades, Ad-Din Hospital has been working as a reliable healthcare institution for the low-income, working, helpless and marginalized population of the country. Especially by providing advanced medical services at low cost, the institution has earned the trust and love of millions of people. For the poor and suffering people of the society, Ad-Din is not just a hospital, but a last resort for treatment.”
Any untoward incident should be investigated fairly, impartially and transparently and legal action should be taken against those responsible. But a decision to shut down or close down an entire institution based on an isolated incident would seriously undermine the right of millions of ordinary people to receive medical care.
They said that if an institution like Ad-Din Hospital, which is aimed at public welfare, is closed, the biggest victims will be the poor, working class and lower-class people of the country. It will cause irreparable harm to those who are unable to seek treatment in expensive private hospitals due to limited resources.
They also said that healthcare is a fundamental right of the people. Therefore, accountability, due process and public interest must be given utmost importance in any decision-making in this sector. At the same time, they emphasized the formulation and implementation of effective and realistic policies to improve the quality of services and ensure patient safety.
In a statement, Advocate Atiqur Rahman and Laskar Md. Taslim Ad-Din called for a reconsideration of the decision to cancel the license of Medical College Hospital and urged the concerned authorities to find an acceptable and positive solution.
