Touhid Hossain Sarkar : Today’s 01 June Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation has expressed deep concern and strong protest over the decision to increase fuel prices at the consumer level. The organization’s central president Advocate Atiqur Rahman and central general secretary Laskar Mohammad Taslim made this response in a joint statement.
In the statement, the leaders said that according to the new price list announced by the government, the price of petrol has been increased by Tk 5 per liter to Tk 140 and the price of octane has been set at Tk 145. This increase in the price of fuel oil will increase transportation costs, which will have an impact on every level of the market system. As a result, there is a risk of further increase in the prices of various consumer goods, including daily necessities.
They said that the increase in fuel prices increases the cost of production, transportation and supply. This has a direct impact on ordinary consumers. Especially for working people, low-income and limited-income people, the cost of living becomes more unbearable.
The leaders also said that the lives of the common people are currently under extreme pressure due to the rising prices of commodities in the country. Many essential commodities have already gone beyond the purchasing power of low and middle-income people. In the meantime, the new increase in fuel prices will further increase the suffering of the people and will have a negative impact on the lives and livelihoods of working people.
In a joint statement, they said that increasing fuel prices at a time of inflation is against the public interest. They urged the government to immediately reconsider this decision and prioritize the interests of the common people.
The leaders also demanded that effective steps be taken to strengthen market supervision, control the prices of essential commodities, and protect the purchasing power of working people. They also urged the government to adopt more people-friendly and pragmatic policies to protect the country’s economic stability and the standard of living of the people.
