Rabiul Hossain Chowdhury Ripon: There are only four days left for the holy Eid-ul-Azha. As the time approaches, the sacrificial animal market in Kaptai Upazila’s Notun Bazar field is getting crowded. The entire market has become crowded with hundreds of cows coming from the hilly areas. Buyers and sellers have said that the demand for medium-sized hill cattle is especially high now. Traders have brought cows from far and wide, in the hope of making a profit. It is learned that these cows have been brought to the market from various hilly areas including Farua, Tattanala, Alikheyong, Barkal, Maini Thega in Bilaichhari by trawlers and various vehicles. Some big traders have brought 80, some 50, and some 20 to 25 cows to the market for sale. It was seen that the presence of people is more than the animals. However, most buyers are still visiting the market and bargaining. Many are not making a final decision yet as they want to buy sacrificial animals at the last minute. Some are buying their preferred cows in advance and returning home due to last-minute rush and fear of high prices.
Although retail sales in the local market are somewhat slow, wholesale traders are quite active. Traders from different areas including Rangunia and Raozan in Chittagong are coming to the market in groups to buy cows and take them away in trucks. The Kaptai Upazila Livestock Department is working tirelessly to protect the health of the cows coming to the market. The medical team is regularly monitoring the market and immediate medical care is being provided if any animal falls ill. According to the Upazila Livestock Officer’s office, “Our veterinary team is working round the clock to protect the health of the animals coming to the market. Our goal is to ensure that buyers and sellers can buy and sell healthy animals. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies are working hard to ensure the security of the market. They are keeping a close watch to prevent counterfeit notes and maintain order in the market. So far, no untoward incident has occurred at the market and trading is going on in a peaceful environment.”
