Md. Moniruzzaman, Mymensingh Correspondent : Another 4-year-old child has died of measles symptoms at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in the last 24 hours, taking the number of deaths due to measles symptoms at the hospital to 36.
Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Senior Store Officer Dr. Jhantu Sarkar confirmed the matter in a press release sent from the hospital on Sunday (May 24) morning.
The deceased child was four years old. He was a resident of Rangamatia village in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh district. He was admitted to the hospital on May 20. He later died on Saturday.
In the last 24 hours, 19 people were admitted to the hospital with measles symptoms, 46 people have recovered and returned home, among them, one child with measles symptoms has been transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Currently, 72 children are under treatment at the hospital.
A total of 1,579 children have been admitted to hospitals with measles symptoms since March 17 until Saturday morning. Of these, 1,471 children have recovered and returned home.
Patients with measles symptoms started being admitted to the pediatric department of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital from February this year. The number of patients started increasing from mid-March. A separate isolation ward with 64 beds has been opened in the hospital for the treatment of patients. Three medical teams are on duty there.
Focal person of the Measles Isolation Ward and Associate Professor Mohd. Golam Mawla said, many children in the country suffer from malnutrition. Malnutrition increases the risk of infection, and the complications of measles are more severe. ‘Since there is no ICU for children in the hospital, serious patients are being treated with the “bubble CPAP” method. If their condition deteriorates, they are being sent to Dhaka.
