While visiting the Medir Haor in Nasirnagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria, Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid said that the current government is implementing a multi-faceted plan to achieve economic prosperity for farmers. After observing the situation in the haor on Saturday (May 9) afternoon, he told reporters that the government’s main goal is to ensure the safety of the crops produced by 75 percent of the country’s people. There is a plan to collect paddy directly from farmers at the union level in the future so that farmers get a fair price for their paddy. He also mentioned that a high-level committee has been formed to investigate whether the ‘All Weather Road’ in Kishoreganj is obstructing the flow of water.

Meanwhile, due to favorable weather conditions and no heavy rainfall, the water level in the Medir Haor and surrounding areas has started to decrease. Although some relief has come to the farmers as the submerged paddy fields are visible, most of the crops are on the verge of being destroyed as they have been submerged in water for a long time. According to the Agriculture Department, 11,000 hectares of land in Nasirnagar were planted with boro this season, but 305 hectares of land have been submerged in the hilly terrain, the estimated market value of which is about 13 crore taka. However, local farmers claim that the actual amount of damage is much higher.

A list of 2,500 affected farmers has already been finalized to deal with the damage. In the afternoon, the minister formally inaugurated the rice distribution program of 30 kg each among these farmers. Local MP MA Hannan, Deputy Commissioner Md. Abu Sayeed and Upazila Agriculture Officer Imran Hossain along with senior officials of the administration were present during the inspection.
