Two Bangladeshis, including a college student, were killed in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria. This information was confirmed in a press release by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Saturday morning. Among the deceased is 20-year-old Md. Mursalin, son of Md. Hebju Mia of Dhajanagar village in Kasba upazila and a student of the local Shah Alam Degree College. The identity of the other deceased is yet to be known.
The BGB said that a group of about 15 people crossed the border and entered India at around 11:05 pm on Friday. On their way back, a patrol team of the 49th battalion of the BSF stopped them, leading to a scuffle between the two sides. At one stage, the BSF members opened fire from pellet guns, seriously injuring two people including Mursalin and he died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India. According to the BGB’s initial investigation, the deceased were involved in illegal border-based goods transportation.
After the incident, the commander of the 60th BGB Sultanpur Battalion is maintaining contact with the BSF to bring back the bodies. The BGB has already sent a protest note to the BSF and the process of a flag meeting is underway. BGB’s 60th Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel SM Shariful Islam and Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Chamiul Islam said that coordination is being made with the BSF to hand over the bodies through a flag meeting after the autopsy.
